  1. Thanks bro...

measure my NO3 yesterday..it was zero..will get AZ NO3 to control nitrate if it shoot up...

has been feeding my livestock with mysis shrimp soak with garlic....white spot on blue tangs has disappeared....they r doing ok at the moment, chasing for food...

guess i will just leave them as it is...will dose medicine if necessary...

wat water do u all use to top up/change water? i m using the crystal pro single stage for filtering...TDS read 0ppm 2 weeks ago...but now it increase to ard 40ppm..thought the resin can last for 2 to 3 months? i run very slowly ..should i remove the resin while not in use to extend its life span?

  2. It actually depends on how efficient is your biological filtration. Adding a new fish risks introducing new disease to the tank each time. I've seen my tank battling disease almost every time there's a new addition, sometimes loosing all the life stock due to infamous ick and velvet  . It will be good to quarantine the fish for 1mth before adding into the main tank since u will be constantly adding fish. This also gives time for your tank to cultivate enough bacteria (to combat NH4 & NO2). Do also do plan how u are going to combat NO3. Its going to climb real fast :)

How can i quarantine the new fish? currently i have one 1 and half ft tank....will it be too small for quarantine tangs and induce more stress on them? What is the better way of control NO3?....de-nitrator or dose AZ-NO3?

  3. bro, fowlr or reef tank? Fowlr tanks typically have a larger load with less pristine water quality.

2 tangs are prob the max a 3ft tank can handle, these fishes actually do better in systems 4ft and above. In fact, one large BT alone will not do well in 3ft. Can refer to bro dnsfpl's thread. My suggestion is to stop stocking for the next 3-4 weeks to let the system stabilise first so the bacteria has time to grow and accomodate with the higher bioload (tangs poop alot). Tangs get ich really quickly, in fact if your tank is new, and you didn't qt your tangs, I'm pretty sure the chances of them getting white spots quite high.

For myself, I'm planning to stock up my 3ft with only 8-10 fishes, average 3-4 inches/fish at full adult size. I suppose some reefers like to overstock their tanks with anywhere from 15-20 fishes, using oversized skimmer, and battling to maintain good water quality. Its really up to you. For me, I subscribe to "less is more" :)

plan for the reef tank...will add coral at later stage...yah you are right..the 2 blue tangs are having white spot...but they are still chasing for food....should i just leave them like tat?...i soak the food with garlic liquid..heard it is good to build up fish's immune system....

  4. Hi,

I would like to know what should be the freqeuncy of adding new fish, read online that guideline is about 1 or 2 fish per week....provided NH4 and NO2 are zero before adding new fish..is it true?

I have added 2 cleaner shrimp, 2 clown and 2 blue tang over the past 2 week...is it too much?

how many fishes can i keep inside my 3x2x2 tank? is there a standard guide?...for example, inchesof fish/square litre...

  5. Hi, yup tested the NO2 and NH4 zero and transfer 2 prawn and 1 true clown from my nano tank....added 2 blue tang and one true clown one week later...

looks like there is white spot on the blue tang...but it is still eating...should i dose any medicine?

Btw, how do i know how many fishes i can keep in my 3x2x2 tank?

    any guidelines?

  6. Hi,

Just got a crystal plus DI unit to filter my tap water, the PH for the tap water is about 9. I think it is too high for the marine tank right?

Mixing the water with Tropic Marine Salt, will the PH reduce after mixing? I measure the tank PH, it is about 8.6, maybe due to topping of water which cause the PH to rise (previously was about 8.3). What should I do to reduce the PH? Should I reduce it before pouring the newly mixed water to the tank or after?

I am abit confused about the relationship between PH, KH and alkanity. Can I say that raising the PH will cause the rise in KH and alkanity? I bought the Kent Marine Pro-buffer to raise the dKH level, will it increase the PH level as well? Saw seachem brand the PH buffer and reef builder (for KH) so I am a bit confused on the actual usage.

Need all your input on the above mentioned...... :thanks:

  7. Thanks.....

Will do a 20% change this weekend then transfer my cleaner shrimp from my existing tank...

Does activated carbon help to reduce NH4? I threw in a market prawn on day 3 of my cycling, NH4 read 1PPM pn day 5, added activated carbon on day 6...

    NH4 drop to 0 on day 7....

Think of keeping a pair of true percula clown, already have a in my small tank (not transferred to my 3 ft tank yet), should i get a big or small one to pair up? The true percula clown is quite aggressive towards its own species, it is "heng1 shui1" whether they can be pair up succefully...anhy secret recipe to pair them up? hee...... :thanks:

  8. Hi all, need your advice on below questions:

    1. How many PPM of Nitrate is safe in aquarium?

    2. Read a post that if all NH4, NO2 and NO3 are zeros during new tank cycling, it could be that the tank never went through ANN cycle. Is it true?

    3. Since Nitrate is the final product of ANN cycle, will it finally reduce to zero? Today is the 18th day of my new tank cycling, the NH4 is 0 (first measure was 1PPM), NO2 is 0.1PPM (it was around 0.3~0.8PPM) and NO3 is around 5~10PPM (it was around 20PPM). Can I say that my tank has completed the cycling and it is ready for LS?

    4. The filter wool is very dirty. Should I just replace it or clean it? I heard that it might contain beneficial bacteria? Is it true?

    5. I have just measured my tap water using API NO3 test kit, the reading was 0. Read from forum that it is better to treat the tap water with Crstal Pro before pump it into the fish tank. Anyone has experience with this product? 3 stage or just single stage is good enough?

    6. What could be the source for the high NO3 in the fish tank? My existing 1 1/2 ft tank read >40PPM. How can I reduce it? Do a water change?

    Please help..... :thanks:

  9. Hi, my tank is cycling now....Placed a market prawn on day 3 and remove on day 5...

Day 5 Ammonia reading was around 1ppm..

Today is day 8! Below are the readings:

PH: 8 to 8.3 (Using Tetra PH test kit)

    NH4: 0PPM (Using API NH4 test kit)

NO2: <0.3PPM (Using Tetra test kit)

    NO3: 20PPM (Using API NO3 test kit)

PO4: 0~0.25PPM (Using Aquarium Phamaceutical PO4 test kit)

Wondering how accurate/realiable are the above test kits?....as the readings were taken by comparing the test tube to the color chart, it bounds to have some reading error....

Guys, do u all have any recommendation on the reliable test kit?

Another question is what is this fellow as shown in the attached picture? I guess it came out from the liverocks....does it harmful? do i need to remove it?

    Thankz.....

  10. Help!...have problem fixing the resun chiller!.....

Can't fully tighten the cap...think it is obstructed by the rubber..try force it in but still cannot..water is leaking out from the gap.

    anybody experience this before?

Tried to change the cap but cannot still cannot solve the problem..any recommendation on this?

  11. Hi,

Have setup my tank with sand and cyling now, going to add liverock tomorrow....however, i find that the water still very cloudy a few hours after i pour in all the sand. Normally how long does it take to get the clear water?

last time my water of my 1 1/2 ft tank clear within 1 hr...is it because the flowrate of my return pump not strong enough?

My tank has a overflow and sump at cabinet below, it is quite noisy....anyway to reduce its noise? I am thinking to add more filter wool to reduce the gap between pipe and filter wool...must I leave a bigger gap for oxygen exchange?

  12. Thanks for the advice!

Will receive my tank on this saturday, more questions follow:

    1. Sand. heard that there are two type of sands available, grade 0 and 1. Which type is more suitable?

    2. Rocks. most of my rocks are small pcs, do i need to get a bigger one as base?

    3. Water. natural sea water can speed up the cycling process, thinking of get it from LFS. If not, will do the salt mixing with tap water.

My biggest enemy for my existing nano tank (1 1/2 ft) is white spot. How do I prevent this when I add fish to my new tank next time?

  13. Hi all,

I will be setting up my 3ft tank soon...there are a few things which need all the seniors' advice:

    1. As my 3ft tank will only be ready next weeks, i am curing the liverocks (purchased from fellow reefer here) now, using plastic container with pump on. Do I still need cure the liverocks when I placed them inside the tank?

    2. Read from the website that using a pcs of prawn can speed up the curing process, do I need to put in all the filter materials (bio rings and etc) at this time?

Need your advice please. Thank you.

    Rgrds,

    enseng
