Not true, usually, and in fact most of the times, anthias do best singly either as a male or female, or in a small group of females only. One male to many females applies in nature and in a ratio of 1 male to prob over a thousand females. The small ratio provided in website, normally one to five or six, is in view of our small aquarium captive condition and thus not neccessay true to be the best. However since most of us will not be content to keep jux one anthias and but rather want to recreate the shoaling anthias sight in nature, hence it's often advised to keep only one male and the rest others all females to reduce aggression.
All anthias are hermaphroditic, that is start off as females, then they will change colour as they change sex. So there is a stark difference between the colors of males and females. Do a search for specific species and there'll be tonnes of pics on the net showing you the differences.
Fyi, when u start keeping anthias, do avoid Purple Queen and Evansi, they are v v tough.
