definitely sand bottom for me, even if it means having a shallow sand bed. IMO it is not the corals nor the fish but how natural the whole tank looks that impress and soothes me.

have kept soon hock before in a tank without any form of filtration...threw in a whole packet of rocket shrimps for the soon hock to feast on. however i'm not tryin encourage you to keep them they way i keep. jus to show how hardy they can be. but do bear in mind that soon hock can grow very big although very slowly

may i ask what would be the bare minimal amt of light to still be able to effectively maintain this system? it would be good as a rough guide.
