  1. ok .. Thanks lawrence .. Looks like I have got the "macro" additives already .. Probably I will Slowly get the rest of the additives.. Will get vitamin soon for those zoas that u gave me :)

now I've got very low dkH (5dkH) and am trying to push up slowly.. Hopefully it is not Caused by Mg issues .. Later go home use ur test kit for Mg..

yo Emm, your nick/name actually brings bad memories to me regarding someone close to me. :P

Ca: you have, Kent's + Cr

Mg: you have, Lab grade brandless

KH: you have, Seachem + Kent's

    pH: Good to have, Seachem

Iodine: Better to have, Kent's + Tropic Marin

    Strontium: Good to have, Kent's

Vitamins: very good to have, Human daily supplement (cant remember brand) for tank.

Amino: very good to have, Zeovit.

Trace Element: Two Little Fish, good to have but I seldom dose.

Those bolded will be of more importance.

AND TESTKITS!!! No testkit you dont know how much to dose.

    For Coral:

Coral Food: Kent's chromaplex plankton Concentrate, zooplankton. Zeovit's Coral Vitaliser.

    Those above are for water.

For fish, Amino: Zeovit Amino for fish, Selcon by American Pinpoint, Tropic Marin.

    Vitamin: Kent Zoe.

    Garlic: Seachems.

actually its subjective. Some tanks don't need anything and still do well as most of the time the owner do frequent w/c and depending on stocking as well as filtration efficiency. for a large skimmer, carbon used and ozone used, some of the things especially Iodine will be depleted faster than the rest.

can talk to me more on it. you know where to find me. and i dun have your number, only akinass's. pass me your contacts and add me in msn lost_law@hotmail.com. ask wenjie to add me as well.

  2. I would like to know what kind of additives/supplement is essential(at least) for maintaining a healthy reef tank.

    Current inventory:

Seachem Reef Builder (raises carbonate alkalinity)

    Seachem Magnesium

    GroTech Calcium Pro

    Caribsea Purple Up

May I know what are you guys dosing ?

Please list down brand also =)

    Thanks.

  3. how come yr evaporation so drastic? u not using chiller? even if u use fan, yr water level shd drop at most by 2-3cm...for 2ft and less than 2cm for 3-4ft...and shd not affect the performance of yr skimmer...

did u get skimmate like this coming out?

hmmm .. Evaporation rate about 1 cm per day .. So what u mean is that there is no problem with this kind of evaporation ?

There is skimmate coming out.. But I read that fluctuating water level is no good.. But nv understand why water level can cause a issue with skimmer

  4. wat model is yr reef octopus? so long yr water level in your sump is consistent and is 1/2 or 1/3 level of yr skimmer is ok.

this is my reef octopus running...

I'm using orca int-80 .. Water level is not consistent due to evaporation an topping up of water..

  5. But my concern for apitasia on live rocks is that I'm worried that it might spread to my display tank even if I placed it in sump .. Is it of a concern ? I do not mind it multiplying in my sump as long as those few pieces helps in filtration .. Cos my tank is filled with dead rocks.. Or will u guys still suggest that I throw them away ?

  6. wow... thanks for all the fast replies. =)

ok.. i will not dose vodka just as yet as mine is not a mature set up.

my skimmer is a reef octopus.. in sump... but what is the logic for varying water level that will affect the efficiency of skimmers ? anyone care to explain ?

  7. My tank is currently cycling and need a few pieces of advice.

Qn 1) As i was reading through the dosing of vodka, vodka will help in cultivating bacteria. Now i'm at the stage of cycling my tank and I'm having the thought of dosing vodka hoping to cultivate more bacteria. Does it helps ? or am i at the wrong track ?

Qn 2) My skimmer is placed at the last compartment of my sump, any evaporation of water will cause a decrease in water level in the last compartment. Can anyone tell me why does a water level that is not constant has an adverse effect on the skimmer ? I've no way to place my skimmer else where as i can't fit it in.

Qn 3) I've got a couple of live rocks in my pico tank but is infested with apitasia. Would it be safe if i add them into my sump tank to help in filtration of my new tank ? oh yah.. btw.. my tank is filled with dead rocks now ..

  8. I would suggest you leave out the royal dottyback and the six-line wrasse. In such a small tank, it does'nt matter whether you add them first or last. They are by nature very aggressive fish. Your other livestocks are more pricey, why would you wish to risk them?

    yeap ... Seriously agree with u ...

I jus realize that mystery wrasse cost a fortune !!!

Guess I'll leave that out for the time being as well ..

  9. oh ok.. i will add the dottyback and six line last.

I've a second compartment in my sump which i'm intending to put in chaetos .. i'm wondering if i can hold both the fishes in that compartment first without doing them any harm ?

hey ketchup.. i was actually using ur reef log as a guide(very informative) .. but i see that u added a prawn during cycling process. but may i know what is the benefits of having a rotting prawn in the tank ?

I think i saw ur skimmer at the last compartment with the return pump.. does it produce microbubbles back into the display tank caused by the skimmer ? my sump is going to be a relatively small one and hence my skimmer and return will be at the same compartment. i foresee some trouble with the design.

    many thanks =)

  10. I have a 1ft cube tank which will be tearing down soon as I'm going to start up a new tank.

So current livestock will go into this new tank as well. (2ft cube)

    Current livestock:

    2 x clown fish

    2 x Bangaii cardinal

    1 x six line wrasse

    1 x royal dottyback

    Desired additional stock list:

    1 x midas blenny

    1 x fire goby

    1 x purple goby

    1 pair carpenter flasher wrasse

    1 x mystery wrasse

    1 pair McCosker's flasher wrasse

    1 x royal gramma basslet

Tank is going to be LPS and softies tank. will i have any problem if i add the curent stocks in first before adding new livestocks ?

    need advise in stocking order.

    Thanks =)

  11. Live rocks contain a huge variety of beneficial (in addition to detrimental) flora and fauna. If you use pure dead rocks, these beneficial organisms will need to be introduced into the tank via other means. e.g. live rock/sand from a donor reefer, bacterial cultures, NSW, etc...

oh ok... i've only access to NSW. so probably that is the only source of "life" for my dead rocks... many thanks. :)

  12. I just got this set of 2nd hand cabinet tank(used for a year). I had not set up as family is strongly against in me setting up, thus, I have to give this up.
