Guys thanks for the info. I'm having a 2.5ft x 1.5 x1.5 tank, LR is 12kg.Market prawn used is those tiger prawns we used to makan. (pinch 3/4 of it wifout shell and placed it on the sandbed) I have a feeling one week is insufficient to cycle the tank. I won't use add any fish till N02 = 0 but just got puzzled of the Ammonia and N02 results I got. Do i have to throw in another piece of prawn or just leave it as it is now?

Hi, I have just started to cycled a new tank. Added in Liverocks and thrown in a piece of market prawn to kick off the cycling stage.After a week of cycling, the market prawn has a layer of mucus wrapped around it and there are some bubble in it, half of the prawn body has already been dis-integrated. I test the water salinity and realised the salinity was 1.030, immediately, I poured in some de-chlorinated water to stablise the salinty at 1.025. After which I perform a test on the Ammonia and Nitrite, and was surprised to see that the test results for ammonia was <0.5 while for Nitrite is 0. I'm using salifert test kit for both. My qns is: 1)shouldnt i be getting some high ammonia reading after one week of cycling? if not, I should be getting some nitrite reading. Since both gave a zero result, does that mean my tank has not even started its cycling stage? 2) At the salinity level of 1.030, is it possible for anaerobic Bacteria to grow? Appreciate if anyone could shed some advise on the above. Thanks.

akan datang? The prawn is half gone liao leh.Actually when does Ammonia spike occurs during cycling of tank? anyone knows? As fo the salifert test kit, the lowest is <0.5, I guess you wont be able to tell if you really hit zero.

Thanks for the reply. How do I know whether its is cure or not? When I brought it, it was not stink, bring back home, scrubb it abit and put into tank wif market prawn. The initially 2-3 days was abit of stench (not very strong types only if you stand next to tank then will be able to smell it). After tat on the 4th days onwards no smell coming from tank liao.

I started to cycled my tank a week ago. Put in a piece of market prawn. Till now (which is one week later) the prawn is wrapped by a layer of mucus, can see some bubbles inside the mucus, prawn is not fully disintegrated. Check my Ammonia level and was surprise it read <0.5, shouldnt I be getting some high ammonia reading instead? There should be a ammonia spike rite? it was a gift from a fren n the box did not have any clear instructions on it. Called up fren n he cant seem to recall where he actually got it from.(he brought for quite a long time) There is a In n Out point on the device, I just wanna know what to connect to the "IN" n what to connect to the "out" point. Thanks.
