  1. Hey guys,

Have some problem with algae growth in my tank. Working on not to switch on my lights for too long everyday but still growing. Anybody knows what fish/sea creatures I can introduce to help control the algae growth? Thanks!!!

Hehe, I have 8 snails to help control algae, help alot but still looking for other algae eaters fish to assist the snails.

  2. my own experience hor.. no need chiller.

I got one in my "fowlr" tank for months hosting my two perculas...

one thing anemone dun likes is strong flow and high nitrate.

other than that, it can tolerant temperature as good as your next door clown.. fish that is.

Just to add........I also notice anemones are extremely sensitive to sudden change of water properties.....eg, top up 2L of water or kalkwasser mixture at one go, the tentacles will shrink and body fold up. Now I DIY the 2L bottle with a ball valve to control the drip rate so as to minimise the change in water properties. Hope this info and pic helps :-)

  3. Hmmm everytime i buy turbo snail, they will be quite lively in the bag

but when i put them in my tank they will just die..... refuse to come out at all and die off.

currently every other livestock is ok only turbo snail cant survive

i put them in the tank for about 15 mins then add in the same amount of portion of my tank water into the bag then after 15 mins later then introduce them into the tank

but straight after that it just curl up.........

The snails too TURBO liao plus you ZERO OXYGEN, sure die lah, how to survive......hehehe

  4. for that, i happend to came across some ang mo website

they only take 2 week to cycle the tank~~ and corals doing

very well~~ as what Zephyros stated that there is never an end to water cycling~~~ their secret success in keeping corals alive and growing like no ppl business was to have some back up system for

bacteria~~ Solid DSB and so on~~

Yup, my 3ft tank took abt 2 weeks for the cycling with 18mths old cured Live rocks. 5th day add 2 small fishes, 1st week some crabs, shrimps and snails, 2nd week corals & more fishes. Take ammonia,NO2 & NO3 readings every day.......Only add more when readings are less than 0.3mg/l

10th day - 1 damsel died due to injury after being bullied

11th day - 2nd damsel died (reasons unknown)

30th day - Yellow sabae anemone & Curly Que anemone died due to "sunburn"

35th day - One hermit crab died

Present - Feather Star observed dropping some "feathers", leather shredding skins.

Rest of the stocks as per below, so far so good.....still monitoring closely.......observed after adding another powerhead for more circulation and flow, Anemones does not shunk or get "sunburn" so easily.

  5. actually from this photo looks like ricordia even..lol..

but seriously i think it's manjano....when they are bigger...you can even see purple on their bodies..very nice...but...they like walking around

Right, I think I'll put them in the sump for quarantine first.

  6. hi all

am planning a 3 feet tank (2 feet depth) with mainly softies n LPS.

    thinking of the following config...

    1. PL lights. (2x36W) - 02 units

three 10K tubes and one artinic.

    OR

    4x36W - 01 unit

    also 3 10k and 1 artinic

    2. sump (with DSB grade 0 sand and marcoalgae on reverse photoperiod)

    3. a suitable Weipro skimmer for the sump. which model should i be getting for a 3 feet?

    4. tunze stream - 01 unit (which model should i be getting? ) Or should i be getting a Rio?

    5. fan. (protechic fan) - 01 unit

    6. eggcrates. (aquascaping)

    7. anything else?

oh yeah, anybody knows any freelance tank makers? the prices quoted by some LFS kinda steep. gerald maybe? anyone got his contact/email? i think email better.

    :D

    jon.

Carbon + De-chlorinator + Water parameters Test kits, Ammonia,Nitrite,Nitrate,Calcium,Alkalinity + hydrometer + Temperature gauge + Marine Salt + Sponges for mechanical filteration + rubber hoses for your return pumps. If dont wan chiller, better use external pumps, cut down on heat from the pump motors......etc

  7. I do not dose any medication into my tank. Only food soaked in Seachem's Garlic Guard (and minute quantities of AZ-NO3 that is dosed in my sump).

My anemone doesn't appear burnt, just shrivelled, much like our skin when soaked in water for long time. Colour still retains, just size different.

:thanks: Bro sugi for the suggestion. Will monitor my anemone and try if it does not settle.

Can anyone help ID my anemone? :thanks:

Might be a Yellow Sabae Anemone? I have one like yours, like to wonder around and it doesn't seems to like too strong light, Mine shunk if I on the MH for for than 8hrs. Whenever I switch off the MH for few hrs, they regain back and bloom. I'm now suspecting the UV from the MH might be "sunburning" them. Still monitoring and experimenting though.

  8. I am not going to waste any more time giving advice to someone who persists in having a cavalier attitude towards conscientious reef-keeping.

What facts and figures do you need with regards to the probability of short-term survivability of Acropora corals in a 3-week old overstocked tank overunning with 5 anemones & nudibranchs taken care by someone who doesn't give a hoot about proper care of the other 'well-known as difficult to care for inhabitants' of his tank?

Sure, keep your anemones. They move around too much? Staple them to the LR! Oh btw, you SHOULD really buy an Aquarium coral book to read up. Last time I checked, an Anemone is NOT an LPS coral. Anyway, you don't have to follow we blind people because you're naturally gifted anyway.

You're looking for SPS? Plenty of them in the sea. Take up diving. I'll lend you a chisel and crowbar, I'll even lend you an electric jackhammer if you want to bring up an entire coral head. Go ahead and DO IT ON A BIG SCALE, why just restrict it to your little tank? :pirate:

I'm washing my hands off helping James72. You guys and gals with more patience can take your time to drill it into his head that IT'S NOT SO SIMPLE.

I'll just go and stare at my tank where I have spent so much time, effort, heartache and money and ease my frustration away and console myself that I would have probably killed 20x as much livestock and spent 50x what I did if I remained like some fella here.

Hehehe, you really sounds like you are damn piss off with me AT :-)

Yup, you are right abt the anemones is not a LPS. Just checked my book. Learn something new tonight for me.

Guess there's no advises for me from AT the so call patience, experiences, SPS expert from now on. Well I'll just have to read up more from other sources or learn the blind way.

  9. hi james,

from my experience althought not much, anemone dun just stay in a fixed position, it likes to move ard. u nv know where it gg to move to...mine can move from left end to the right end of my 4 ft tank in just a night..tat 's y i decided not to keep them n letting it go 4 other reefer who has a more suitable environment for it n to prevent it of stinging my other coral.

i'm sure u dun wish to see ur coral not opening up in ur tank..with all the effort u put in, just a small mistake made, make ur effort gone waste..not worth rite? :)

Yup that's the type of answers I'm looking for..........facts and figures.....

mine can move from left end to the right end of my 4 ft tank in just a night
    .........thanks for the info.

Looks like I have to remove my anemones away before starting on SPS or do a partition on the tank.

  10. Oh my, dun think u will ever listern.....well, go ahd with watever u feel rite coz we have nuthin much to commend. Btw, remove ur aneomne before u decided to "experiment" with a "frag of sps".

Ya, that's the 2nd time I heard this comment on removal of LPS if you want to keep SPS. Again I fail to recieve any reasons for the advises made.......is it becos of the anemones sting? If that's so, why can't we separate them apart, anemones at the left bottom, sps at the right top?..........pls give amble facts to support ur commends and not just the blind follow the blind or becos tom, dick or harry said so.

The Creator or the Follower.......which group do we belong to?

  11. Thanks for wanting to clarify what I mean.

Yes. I mean those who don't bother researching. Reef-educated is what I'm saying. Not uneducated as in they have never been to school before.

In context of those who are not willing to spend money on good equipment and invest in the right setup and those who rather spend money replenishing dead livestock week after week.

This hobby takes up money and those who have other financial priorities will have to compromise a LOT.

Trust me, a tank with a good setup + an inexperienced reefer will be better off than a tank with a lousy setup + an inexperienced reefer.

An experienced & experienced reefer with very little budget CAN setup a basic tank & nurture it successfully with dedication.

Sadly, most newbies lacking knowledge and experience and will rush a setup that needs frequent upgrading and change of husbandry skills when they run into problems dealing with less-than-ideal water parameters, nuisance algae problems, poor growth of corals etc. I know, because I was a newbie too.

I was 'uneducated & poor' before too. But I had an attitude to learn & improve and make rapid progress compared to my friend who introduced me to reefkeeping.

Apologies to those who feel offended by my choice of words but I hope my clarification will clear all doubts to what I mean.

    AT

Wah, my apologies for the "unhappiness" caused. Didn't know my question will end up with so much disturbance.....Hehehe.......relax lah, "dont tension".

Life still goes on, so lets depart from MARS and come back to EARTH.

Present status and details, water improving, Ammonia 0mg/l ,N02- drop to <0.1mg/l,NO3- 5mg/l,Ca drop from 600ppm to 480ppm, Dkh 12.

The 50kg LR were brought 2ndhand from someone's tank who has been cycling them for 18mths. I understand my 150w MH light may not be sufficent, thus I need to try out first before I upgrade to a 250w or 400w, same goes for the chiller.

So what do you advise I do now?

    A) Continue to monitor the water parameters every day until the experts give the "go ahead" signal.

    B) Follow the old full proof method and give away all the corals and fishes and start all over again (cycling for 12mths) - Personally I think if all human follows the "fail-safe" method, there will never be any breakthrough in life, non any learnings.

    C) Wait for the crash that "the experts" predicted becos I'm stocking too fast.

    D) Maintain status and experiment with a frag of acro to test out although the stocking maybe too fast, but with close monitoring, there might be a slim chance of success.

What I need is advises with facts and figures to back you up so I can analyse and think it through, not artillery bombardment. Eg. If you stock up too fast, what are the things you will observed before your tank crashes. Fish dying, white sliming materials forming on the corals, brown algae (diatom) growing......etc

Oh ya, I also notice if I switch on my MH light for 8hrs, my anemone (anemone is at bottom on the 5" DSB) tentacles will shrink and become very thin, brownish marks on its body, the mouth will open very big and body tends to be closing/folding up, like dying. But when I off the light and leave it for a 6hrs, the tentacles recovered back to its original thickness, brown marks disappear, mouth closes back and body opens up like normal........is that a sign of "sunburn", the 150w MH might be too strong for the 2.5ft depth or I switch on the MH too long? What puzzled me is those smaller anemone at the top of the LR (which is nearer to the MH) seems to be ok, whereelse the bottom anemone is suffering......Any experts have any logical explanations?

  12. Compulsive Buying Disorder!! I almost forgot about this term I coined up! :)

Fuel, no one is flaming James72 as I far as I am concerned.

It is our responsibility to share with him the better way to do things. He can choose to believe us or do things on his own and learn the hard way. It's quite straightforward.

Just that while in this hobby.... do spare a thought for beautiful & fragile marine life!

Oh sorry for the late reply, & thanks for all the advices......Guess I can't control the tempt whenever I visit the LFS, thus stocking up so fast. However I do read up and started stocking only after my NH3 and NO2- are zero and NO3- is 0.5mg/l. So far the corals are still surviving, but lose the 2 nudibranch liao. Have since stop the stocking up as I observed the NO2- is creeping up to 0.3mg/l & the lost of my 2 nudibranch. Will continue after it has stabilise.

As for the choosing of the type of corals, whether is it for experts or beginners, frankly speaking......I dont care :-) I believe in learning from mistakes. If you dont try, you will never know. Therefore, despite

all the kind advices, I do appreciated it, I'll still go ahead and purchase a frag of an Acro to try.......sorry if in the process of learning I sacrifies some marine lives, well.....this is what I called life.

Thy may know some things, but never assume thy know everything.

  13. The LR were with me for abt 18months, you still need to cycle them meh? Anyway, abt a mth ago, i sold them to you at a much lower price than wat u are offering now PLUS a discount which u asked for....

*RESERVED* LR have been reserved by BEN at $3/kg. Orgasbt I give ben even more discount then you give me :-)

    James
