  2. that what i was told...but considering some using Rio 20HF which is also not pressure rated pump, it works on their skimmer.

so was looking at the specs of the rio and ehiem, it seems like the ehiem 1264 is capable of driving the minature beckett....

anymore comment before i got and pick up one would be nice...tks.

I have seen a number of Bros using Rio20, Rio 32 to drive a Beckett but not Eheim unfortunately. Better be safe than sorry I suppose. Dont want to end up spending the dollars to find it unsuitable. Thats really my advice

  6. Just faced another drama in my tank over the last 7 days and hence the poll. I personally dont have any quarantine facilities currently which may have resulted in my 2nd tragedy of massive ICH outbreak in the year.

It all started with a new addition Achilles Tang which we all know is ICH prone. It was infested with ICH and has since surrendered its IC last week. Since then my other LS wasnt spared and I've lost my Blue spotted Jawfish and Blackcap with a few others also showed Ich infection.

Added Reefsafe Medications as of last night but not sure how effective it will be. I ran a 9W Corallife UV on my 4ft but it may be under powered as I understand.

I am seriously thinking of setting up a quarantine tank after these 2 painful dramas. There are some questions which I have which I hope some seniors can advise.

    1. Do you keep your QT running even though it may be empty? Ie Skimmer and Powerhead.

    2. Do you run medication in your QT for all new fishes even though they may appear healthy and ICH free?

  7. Thanks Bro for the condolences. My Sohal indeed got characters. die die dun wanna eat at all. Not even pecking at the rocks. Tried mysis, artic pods, cyclopeeze, pellets, algae bamboo and seaweed , all failed to tempt him to eat... alas, starved himself to eat....

Waat food have u tried to get him to feed ? I've got a buddy tat bought a PT and a sohal tang at one go and its the first 2 fish to be intro into his tank and starts feeding within a few days later. Guess, presence of other Tangs does effects his appetite too :eyeblur:

Mine surrendered its IC yesterday :cry2::cry2:

Tried all sorts of food too and even went on the extreme of feeding live mysis but to no avail. It was pecking occasionally on red bamboo but it wasnt sufficient to sustain its diet and went thinner and thinner. Alas its sad.

  8. Bro sorry to hear to ur Sohal tendered his IC. Very stubborn feeder indeed. I have 1 in my tank currently for some 3 weeks already and still not feeding too. Its only occasionally pecking on the red bamboo but getting thinner as days goes by. If it continues think will up the lorry soon too.

Not sure if anyone has success with Sohal can share some pointers. :eyebrow::eyebrow:

  9. is the skimmer still avaiable?

I've bought the Skimmer already and am currently using it for my 4x2x2. I am looking at upgrading my Skimmer as part of my reconstruction of my sump and to keep my skimmer in cabinet.

If you can wait then it should be available again in Sep 08. I have also replaced the Rio 32 pump with a brand new one in Feb 08.

  10. Keep your dwarf angels well fed and there is a higher chance that they will leave your zoos alone. However there is always an element of risk with Angels.

I have seen bros posting that their Angels that have been well behaved for years suddenly went crazy and started in a coral feeding frenzy. Most of the time it should be due to hunger but that again is just our speculation.

  11. Those are zoa frags but managed to put into my tank. The true percula managed to pair up with my small percula and after releasing them into my tank....they whacked my 3 black clowns.....managed to catch them and quarantine them.....sighz...thought i can remove my beta box but think got to be in my tank for sometime till the true pers show less agression. If not, got to sell my true percula pair...sob sob.....now my 3 black clowns swimming happily outside the beta box and mocked at the 2 true percula.....lol...lucky still can catch them....if cant...then i will have headache. Maybe bring my true per pair to be trained by my maroon pair....see what is the effect.....lol(joking)....

Thanks for the ride to Coral Farm and LCK. The solar wrasse doing fine and 2 hermits also...though i cant trace them but so far did seem many empty shell on the sandbed....lol...my solar also got whacted by my blue fairy but managed to tame her down and accept solar wrasse.

Catch up with you soon. : )

Initial aggression is normal. They give up after a few days. Personal experience is that Wild caught True Perc is more fierce than the Tank Bred B/W clown. This is true even if your B/W is resident with True Perc being new addition. I have similar experience as well until I lost all of them to Ich outbreak.

  12. Bro,

Sorry to hear about your loss but please do some reading before you start. Anemone typically requires good lighting and have tendancy to move about if they are not happy. Also Anemone can sting other corals that you may have. More importantly Anemone releases toxic when they die. There its not recommended for beginner typically.

Sea Horse are beautiful but they can normally only survive in species only tank given their slow nature in getting their food. Putting them in a reef tank in most cases is as good as killing them.

Do you have a skimmer? This is the most basis essential item of a marine setup. I would recommend a good skimmer to start with or you will end up upgrading.

Lastly and most impt thing is if you had measured your water parameters ie NO2, NO3, Amonia etc?

  13. Need some help/advice for the rising nitrate level in my tank. Just did a nitrate test about half a week ago and it was alarmingly high... about 30+ ppm. Did a 20% water change immediately, and the nitrate level has gone down slightly, to about 25ppm, but still not low enough.

Am currently running a tank system with physical filtration (with filter wool), deltec skimmer, live rocks and chaetos. Tank itself has SSB, though I was advised that SSB does not provide much biological filtration. My tank is currently lightly stocked: 4 ft tank with only 8 small fishes, a few invertebrates, but sometimes i tend to overfeed a bit due to ever-hungry blue tang and clownfishes.

To temporarily, I will be doing more water change (20% each time) this week. However, still need advice from other reefers on any suggestion to help curb the rising nitrate level in the tank. Would "trimming" my chaetoes help to encourage nutrients removal from the water (basket of chaetos is pretty full right now)?.

    Bro,

The most effective way to reduce your nitrate is to control your feeding. Understand that seeing your fishes feast is a pleasure but that can lead to many undesireable situations such as rising Nitrate causes unwanted Algae growth or worse killing your LS as a result.

If you really cannot resist feeding then your only bet is have a good Denitrator and regular water change. As you have stated you are already changing 20% water weekly and that didnt really help. So if you continue your feeding style then a Denitrator is almost a must.

  14. I had the same experience when I started my first tank years ago when I got the foul smell due to excessive die off as I put in a full market prawn and had weak flow in my main tank.

Do look at the flow in your tank as having good flow will decrease the amount of stench.

Fresh water dip is not necessary especially if you bought nice rocks with Coraline on them as fresh water dip for too long a time will leave with with dead rocks and the coloration may not be as nice.

  15. Pods will still be the primary source of food for these cuties. I've had success previously getting it to feed on frozen Brine/Mysis shrimp but it will take a while. Therefore need to ensure that you have enough pods to sustain them till then.

I've had buddy whom noticed that keeping Chaeto ie Refugium actually helps keeping up the Pods numbers. That be another supplement to keep these cuties alive.
