  1. I noticed that by putting your hand into the water, skimming activity decreases. Everytime I place my hand into the water to remove uneaten food, my skimmer which was bubbling over to the cup stop and foam level decreases to just below the reaction chamber. Maybe you've been touching your water too much? Mine took about a week before I see foams running into my cup, probably because of my fiddling hands
  2. Hah, thats why I say we can't do shit about it So what choices do we have....if SBS pisses you off, take TIBS...which happens to not ply the same route most of the time! Now I heard that the new NorthEast MRT lines will be run by Transit...so there are competition now.... <_< Right, competition.
  3. Tango they ship the cowfishes with small plastic tubes inserted around the horns, not styrofoams lah. Those smaller cowfishes have blunt horns so no need to cover. I don't think covering horns is cruel, to not cover and cause water to spill out thus killing cowfish is cruel
  4. Yeah! They're really adorable. I read that that you can train them to feed from your hand...which explains that cute pix I just got 1 myself yesterday. Bewarned that they would release toxin when stressed or attacked (like boxfish) thus annihilating the whole tank. There are just as many reports about cowfish being dead with no toxin found Take the risk? Heh.
  5. Its really sad...and it really pisses me off with the fact that SMRT can have a camera that doesn't record. Does it take a scientist to figure out that accidents will happen especially on a non covered platform? And the worst thing is that Singaporeans can do nothing...can't boycott, can't sue... I guess by now you should know that I'm full of angst
  6. Yes, you cannot tap for exit. You have to wait till the door open, wait for the "NO ENTRY" sign on the card reader to change before you can alight. Sucks doesn't it. Also MRT's video camera doesn't record....so they're gonna install recordable ones in phases after all the accidents have happened. Its all our fault cause our fares barely cover anything <_<
  7. You may want to get cowfish instead. Just as cute but not as aggressive towards other fishes. It is not reef save however
  8. Actually I've no idea what is happening but saw that paragraph on the book and thought maybe that's what happened to those clams. Sorry, not much help after all
  9. Hi Achilles Tang Borrowed a marine book from the NLB and found this paragraph: "One unexpected problem was finding that the larval stages of a snail parasitize the young clams. The larvae settle between the shell and the mouth and then feed on the mantle, eventually killing the clam. The snails have to be removed manually as soon as they are noticed. Another snail with similar habits can be washed out. All these problems occur on top of the difficulties of captive breeding." Hope its what you are looking for. Cheers
  10. Hah, ok. I just realise the foolishness of my last question
  11. I cycled my 2ft tank with 3 dead prawns, decompose till disappear but did not have the kind of smell that you described. Either its my nose or its your LR I think <_
  12. I have a question, LR is supposed to be live so as to breakdown unwanted elements like nitrite right? In this case the LR is almost dead so what good does LR do?
  13. I got a bicolor blenny 3 days ago, haven't eaten since. I read that they eat algae (new tank, no algae) and meat but mine haven't touch the frozen krills I left in the tank. Any idea what else to feed? Thanks.
  14. You are cycling your tank? Then what happens to your lion and star fishie? I think you don't have to cycle your tank with live fish, just throw in 2 dead prawns and wait for ammonia to spike. You also shouldn't add corals as an uncycled tank would probably kill them. Add only live rocks to cycle together with the tank.
  15. I bought 3 small false percula clowns (same tank) few days ago, bad mistake. 2 of the bigger ones paired up to bully the smallest one. It is now swimming alone on the other end of the tank with slight tattered fins. Learn from my mistake, don't buy 3 clowns
  16. Ok, knowing nuts, I went and buy a submerged pump with a filter that is attached to the top of the tank. This is the recommendation of the shop. When I got home, I realise that the jet of water that is being pumped out is quite strong....do I need something that powerful? Should I change it to a smaller one?
  17. Hi I dive too. If you guys wanna pick up diving, the requirement is to be able to swim 200m and thread water for 2mins continuously....I think. The diving season for 2002 is over due to Monsoon. If you want, you can do your Open Waters at expensive places like Phuket and Bali which in my opinion is not worth spending since you won't be enjoying much while under training. Season for diving in Malaysia starts end Feb/Mar. It'll be better to wait till then. Current standard course fee for Open Waters in Pulau Aur or Tioman is around $499. Add another $30 for equipments (BCD and regulator). You'll probably get your own scuba mask and snorkle which will cost about $80 together but they do come with that $30 you paid. You can definitely find shops that would offer you cheaper prices but becareful cause alot of shops compromise on safety and education because of competitions. They are only interested in earning your money (bad) and giving you a cert (great!). While in your case you should want a good education cause you don't want to panick and forget how to replace your scuba mask while under water right ;p If you think diving in Malaysia is expensive...you can learn diving in Singapore. Its about $250 but the water condition is Singapore is inferior. Depending on your luck, you may get a 1.5 - 2m visibility while on certain days...in fact most days you can hardly see your outstretch hands. Marine life wise, you'll see alot of sea worms, nudibranches and reef crabs but very little fishies....so little that you can count with just one hand ;p Alright, hope that helps. Cheers Joe
  18. Yeah, I fell in love with a porcupine puffer while diving. One swam past me and allowed me to pet it on the head! Dying to get one after that... ;p
  19. Hi anakjoh thanks for replying. Do you have any suggestion on the kind of brand(s) I should get? Very scared of going to the shop and get recommended things that I don't need....kena chop carrot head ;p The shops have been giving me answers contradicting to the book that I read so I don't trust their recommendations very much but I cannot just buy off the shelves cause I do not know what to buy. Eg, what kind/size/brand of skimmer, filter (canister or HOB?) to buy...etc... The shops that I went to, one of them say I can just use their salt water and dump fish in while the other say I need to let the water settle for 3 days. None tell me I have to cycle my tank so abit afraid of taking their advice. Thanks again ;p
  20. Hi I'm new to marine aquarium. My plan is to keep 1 porcupine puffer and maybe another 2-4 clown fishes in a 70cm long tank. I've no plans to keep any corals, just the fishes mentioned. I've read up the forum postings (very shag), some internet articles (quite confusing) and bought a book (great book!) on how to set up a tank but I'm still quite clueless on the seize, type and brand of equipments that I should buy. The few shops that I went to weren't really interested to advice me on what I wanted to know unless I wanna buy from them. Can anyone suggest a shop that would give me honest advice on how to set up my tank? Or better still if you guys can give me recommendations to the equipments I should buy and if possible, give me a rough price for each of the equipments. Thanks! Cheers, Joe
  21. Hi guys Any idea where I can buy a porcupine puffer? Been searching high and low. Thanks. Cheers
