  1. Hi guys, just measured my Calcium level and was shock to be 35 drops of regent 3 which is around 700mg/l (AZoo Ca test kit). Question : Will too high a calcium level cause harm to the SPS or LPS corals? What remedy action can be taken or should I just leave it or add in a few more Acros or clams to help consume the calcium?

  2. Just want to share the latest skimmer I saw in the most established marine LFS in KL.

The brand is MACRO. It's a external hang on. It comes in a long rectangular box 2 ft in height from tip to toe ie top of collection cup to base. The bubbles are really fine and in one day's operation, one cm ++ of thick gunk was collected. There was a bonus too in that the half portion works as a filter - mechanical or biological your choice. What's really cool is that the same box is designed for exchangeable functions as a denitrator or calcium reactor, the specific parts are sold separately.

What's more it's quiet and as the controlling valve is external, you don't get your hands wet. Current Price : RM590.

Hi, you have any pic of the Macro skimmer?

  3. Bro, I did the hardest way. I transfer the whole tank with the arowana still inside it. The height of the water inside that tank was a bit higher than the height of my arowana. It was a silver arowana and gave it away together with the tank to my relative. It took ard 6 guys to transfer the whole tank from the 2nd storey down to the carpark and up the lorry. That was ard 8yrs back. Now that I had moved to a higher storey, 11th floor up, I dread if I should have to move house again, now that I have 3 planted tank. Er and no I did not use the 'sleeping medicine'. Hope this helps somehow.

Get a big plastic bag and dip it inside ur tank slowly, let ur arowana swim into it then get it out. This way there will be minimum damage to ur arowana.

  4. also for those worry about Hydrogen sulfide

"Hydrogen sulfide is an amazingly toxic gas, but that toxicity is exceeded by its pungent rotten-egg odor. The gas will have an exceptionally strong odor, and will seem overwhelming at levels well BELOW toxic amounts. If you can smell this stuff without it literally taking your breath away, it won't be at a harmful concentration. There is no real evidence to indicate that it may reach toxic levels in a deep sand bed."

Base on the MSDS of H2S (Hydrogen Sulphide), if the amount is more than 10ppm it will block off or kill your smelling nerve and you will no longer sense the pungent smell. Anywhere above 100-1000ppm, you will be brain dead.

p/s: Never trust your nose to measure H2S.

    2 cents worth......

  5. Hi,

I am new in setting up Calcium Reactor.

Need all your help to advise me what to look for.

Thinking of getting the following products from My Reef Creation.

Please advise if they are suitable:

    Picture 1 and 2 : CR1 or CR2

    Picture 3:

Dual Gauge regulator. Includes dual gauge, solenoid valve, bubble counter, check valve. Includes 3 feet of Co2 tubing

    Picture 4:

    MRC-pHc122

Milwaukee pH controller with probe and alarm!

    Tank: Get from S'pore

Pump: Get and fix from S'pore

Am I getting the right equipement ?

What else do I need ?

How much does the whole project cost?

  6. I just wonder for the people who choose to install their pump externally, is this because they are not using a chiller?

If you are using a chiller it does not really matter whether the pump generate more heat or not except that the electric bill is higher.

The advantage I can see of putting these pump in the water is that these pump are designed to be submerse in water. If you run them dry, the lifespan of the pump will be shorten, since there may not be enough water in the magnetic shaft to lubricate and reduce the friction between the magnetic and the plastic casing.

Imagine what disaster it will do to your tank if the pump is broken during the day when no one is around. Your chilled water only circulate in your sump.........your coral melts.....

Not to start a debate here but just want to get some opinion.

    Cheers,

    Patrick

I believe if the pump is design to run both externally & submersible(refer to pump manual for details), then it should be able to generate its own cooling by means of cooling guide vanes from casing or process media like a canned pump. Those stated submersible pump only should never be use as a external pump as it uses only the process media to cool down the motor.

Running external pump have a big advantage for those without a chiller due to heat contribution to the water , those with chiller the hassel is probably insignificant (lower your electricity bills by a few $).

    Other minor advantages are :-

    1)Electricity leakage to water

2)Rust from pump parts contaminating the water

3)Better cooling of pump (air are of smaller molecules than water therefore resulting in better heat exchange)

    Disadvantage :-

1)Process leak to external (Lack of containment)

2)Slightly more noise contribution (sound waves travel faster through air than water)

    2 cents worth....cheers

  7. Have ordered some BLV bulbs but it will take one - two weeks time.

Need any 2ndhand 250W SE MH 6500K,10000K,20000K bulbs for emergency use due to bulb blown. Budget $10-$15, Will self collect anywhere in Singapore.

Or if anyone have any brand new 250W SE MH to sell me at cost price pls PM me. Budget (10K-$95, 20K-$115)

    Thanks

    Eric

  8. How does it works ?

Understand that at the centre is a circle that change color according to the ammonia in the water and all yuo have to do is to see the circle color and match it to the color chart at the side ? Correct ?

Can anyone advice the corresponding reading to the range of numeric value as if measured by test kits ?

Just add a dead prawn then wait till the chart change colour. On every colour change, do a test for NH3. You will know ur chart concentration now.

  9. Hi All,

Presently I have 34 sets of metal halide for sales.

The bulb that came with it is 250W(not meant for marine usage) . The ballast can support up to 400W max.

It was use for a project at park mall(2 months)

    Selling at S$ 80 each(WYSIWYG)

    Any taker?

Pls reserve 2 for me, need a pic also. As long as it can occupied my 3ft x 1.5ft x 2ft tank, I'll take it. Will modified the support myself. thanks! Looking forward to your PM.

  10. hi guys,

what do u think of this?? I ve seen alot of reefers who prefer their DIY MH to sit on tank....but they have no idea in how to do it......

some even uses pvc to hang their MH which i find it not safe in long run. :( no offence for those who are using it....... :D

Nice work there Dr. Evil ! Simple yet stable. If you do come out with the 2 x 250W SE MH, or 1 x 250W SE MH and 1 x 400W SE MH for 3ft tank, Do pm me a quotation. thanks.

    Eric
