  1. Hi

My water parameters after two weeks are.

    Ammonia 0.25

    NO2 0.05

    NO3 <1mg/L

I am using cured LR from other reefers and did not use a prawn to cycle. I have 2 schools of thought. There is no LS in the tank and therefore no ammonia to feed the bacteria in the LR to produce NO3.

The 2nd thot is the tank has not gone thru the ANN cycle and hence the absence of NO3.

Can I try to stock the tank once the Ammonia goes to 0 hoping that the LR biological filter has enough bacteria to cope since I am using cured life rock or is it better to use a market prawn to cycle the tank to go through the ANN cycle anyway.

Kindly enlighten, I do not want to stock the tank yet in case if there is a ammonia spike if the bacteria in the LR is unable to handle the waste from the LS.

    Thanks.

  2. Hi reefers,

Really need help. Bought some life rocks from fellow reefers here. The rocks has been in my tank for the past two weeks and I have not noticed any skimate in the skimmer.

Read from other websites that I do not have to go through the cycling process since my life rocks are already cured in other reefers' tank. Do I still need to cycle the tank with market prawn or can I just add LS into the tank immediately.

I have not tested for ammonia yet but intend to do so within the next few days.

    Thanks

  3. this is the only process which i always dun like to do when helping reefer to make the overflow box

hate to cut pvc piping especially the elbo

In fact it is not really hard, I use my dremel to cut it. I can cut some for you

    if you need it.

    :D

  4. I hv been using 2 x 1.25" siphon tubes aka U-tubes. no such problem as impossible to expel air from within the tubes.

Maybe you can share with me how you expel the air from your 1.25" U tube. Do you use a lenght of tubing to suck the air out and start the siphon ? I have tried using 1" pipe but the siphon just won't start.

  5. Tested the box today, so far so good.

Here are some points in constructing the inner and outer box.

    1. Inside box teeth is cut with a Dremel tool. I do not have a router to cut the teeth but paln to buy one when I save enough.

    2. All joints are capilarry cemented. Since it's my first time working with acrylic, I started with the inside box first. The inside box do not have to be water tight. With experience gained from making the inside box, I progressed to make the outside box which was reletively water tight.

3 Drain bulkhead is 1" and 3/4" for the siphon tubes. Do not use 1" siphon tubes. I found out the hard way, it is not possible to expel air from a 1" siphon pipe. I ended using two 3/4" siphon pipe for increased flow.

    4. All acrylic 5 mm thick from Dama.

Hope this helps for those attemting a similar project. ;)

  6. My DIY'ed overflow box. Leak testing now, the cup is to collect the water dripping from the bulkhead. I did not glue the durso assembly yet , that is why it is leaking.

The box is tested leak free.

Also neet help to remove some spots on the acrylic caused by accendental spillage of acrylic glue. So far tried brasso but the results are no very good. ;)

  7. i used those very watery type... and it leaks too ..

i played cheat.. i use hot glue to seal the leaks..

i suggest... if u have scrap acrylics.. crush them until very fine .. put into a glass jar... pour the watery solvent into the jar .. then cover it..

leave it overnite until all the acrylic melts.... then u have those thick glue liao...

i think the thick ones can seal better... unless ur cutting edges are really flat...

thankz rock fish for sharing, I will also try to play cheat.
