  1. I made my own food mix with the following:

    prawn

    squid

    silver fish

    cockles

    garlic juice

    dried cyclopeeze

    seaweed flakes

alternatively might also add spirulina, frozen mysis/ brine shrimps, or even formula 1/2 pellets to the mix.

My fishes love it, even my mandarin and leopard wrasse also like it. :)

but I only feed them this during weekends as it really pollutes the water.

  2. hijack this thread to ask a question :D . I got 2 seahorse but i'm not sure wat bred are they. they are black but some parts of the body turning pale yellow with black spots on them. anyone know what bred they are? thks :)

  3. umm.. ok i am using a 1/2 inch pipe! ard 16MM i guess..

the flow rate i could not determine how much per hour by just looking

    haven reach that level! hehe..

ya! i am worried it will flood my house!

lol.. but will drilled hole.. the flow rate is small! and slow!

then my pump will be too strong..

are u suggesting i change a bigger pipe??

16mm will be too small, that's why you got a small flow rate when replace the end cap with a drilled one. suggest you change the piping size.

as a rough gauge: 3FT tank uses 20mm piping 4FT tank uses 25mm piping.

you have to replace the end cap with a drilled one inorder for the overflow to be able to auto-restart. you have to play ard with the skimmer with the water level and the drilled hole size.

if the hole is too small, air cannot enter the pipe as fast to maintain your siphon, the overflow cannot restart by itself.

  4. ok, as referred to helldust!

i did wat u say step by step

BTW, i add the skimmer part! so my main tank will not be suck dry! hehe..

ok. the water kick started.. water flow very fast out with the end cap placed @ 2 (as labelled by u)

however, once i remove the end cap, water is greater reduced by 50%..

my worries are.. will the water get cut off all the sudden?

as the flow rate isn't as strong..

2ndly is, say once my pump malfunction,

and the overflow will auto cut off as the water level is below my skimmer mark.. then once i start to pump water again,

do i need to kick start the overflow system again?

or will it auto flow by itself once the water level exceeds my skimmer mark, and flows into my skimmer????

abit confusing.. but do u get wat i mean??

as for TAN.. the noise water is alrite

i only hear my pump running.. :D

Glad that you able to get it working. :)

actually the trick is replace the end cap labelled at 2 with another one with a hole drilled into it.. you really need trial and error to find the optimal size, too size the siphon will not be able to restart, too large the overflow will be noisy. once you find the perfect size, the flow will be high as compare to removing the entire end cap. ;)

quite unlikely to cut off the overflow due to flow too slow (din really tried out so cannot confirm). :P

you dun not need to restart the overflow as it will restart by itself once the pump starts to run again. (but important factor is the hole size at 2). check you have precaution measures for back flow from your pump return piping. :)

  5. ok let's do it step by step:

    1. ensure the part labelled 1 is inside the tank

    2. attach an end cap to the end labelled 3

    3. filled up the pipe with end labelled 2. using either filled it with water or suck water until you taste the salt water (preferred method).

    4. immediately cover part labelled 2 with another end cap.

    5. remove the end cap at part labelled 3.

    6. the siphon should start. Remove end cap at part labelled 2 when a full siphon is achieved (indicated by very high flow rate).

however your siphon does not have the skimmer portion, therefore it might drain your main tank dry (caution).

  6. did that! pour water into the Tee joint outside rite?! but still it did not kick start the flow

    can cannot one help me??

did you seal the output with an end cap before filling the pipe with water?

only release the end cap when the pipe is totally filled with water, this will kick start the overflow piping.

  7. anyway to reduce the noise?

you can either move the skimmer body lower into the water or make/ replace the end cap into another with a hole on it (hole size have to estimate - too small the overflow will not auto-restart, too large the noise will still be there).

  8. if after gettin the flow, can i remove the top up pipe ( the one with the cap) and place the cap to the T-elbow???

if you are refering to removing the whole length of pipe including the end cap, the overflow will not work. becos water will come out from the T-joint. however if you mean just replacing the end cap with a T-joint, then this can be done.

  9. is this workable? i choose 20mm pipe. i tried it in a pail of water(without the skimmer portion yet) , the flow is very small and slow... why? can anyone help me with it

the situation is normal as you just try it using a pail of water, there is not enough downward force to drain the water out. try elevating the pail of water, and see the water flow makes a difference. ;)
