  1. If it is between the sand and glass then it's nothing to worry about.

Pls elaborate. Thru the glass, I can see lots of bubbles in the sand bed and these make their way up. Are these good or bad?

Also, what are the signs that the DSB has matured sufficiently to start denitrifying (other than a lowering of NO3 reading?)?

    Thanks

  2. I was using 2 x 36 PL over a nano with 4" DSB. I had those bubbles then, but not a lot.

Recently, I changed the lights to 3 x 24 T5. Now, I get to enjoy an amazing bubble show everyday. Bubbles were bubbling to the surface in droves.

Question : Was this because of the improved lighting? Or something else?

Then my next question. I don't have surface skimming in this tank. Skimmer is a Prizm. Most of the bubbles do not burst when they reach the top. Right now, I lay newspapers on the surface about twice a week to remove the scum there. Should I increase the frequency to remove the floating bubbles as well?

    Thanks

  3. Think transparent hose is ok,

I recall reading somewhere that the the tube should ideally be opaque. Can't remember why - maybe its to prevent algae buildup or maybe the bacteria thrives in the dark.

  4. the cake shop one is the one near the police post....yes, that is THE ONE, how do u find that shop?

Oh, I walk by a lot as I live around there ... Not exactly friendly, little LS, mostly corals (but not nice), expensive! Their display tank is grossly overstocked. Boy, that angel's living in a toilet bowl and a newly added powder brown's developing ick ....

Katong joo chiat siglap? where got? i never see b4 leh

katong is along tanjong katong that road right? that one dun have much livestock... only got a lot of hardware right?

Katong - Kwang's at Crane Rd - some don't think much of them, but I've purchased only two fish from them so far and both are thriving and growing well in my FOWLR. Oh, and they have filefish regularly too ... Then there's Reef Aquarius at Koon Seng. That's where I bought the smallest Mandarin I can find and it eats blood worm and mysis too!

Siglap - eaquarist, behind the Caltex station (7% discount if you drive and don't go to Bukit Timah Rd a lot)). Friendly bunch of young people running the show. Reasonable pricing.

Katong - yes along Tanjong Katong Rd (haven't been there) and Marine Pets at the building next to Katong Shopping Ctr.

i know of another more 'secret' one, its in something like a abandoned factory near the foreign students hostel @ kallang area, i think @ tanjong rhu

I think you're refering to the old Aquatechnique (or something like that) office. They've moved and they do mostly setups rather than retail business.

know anymore that have a lot of livestock? and at least acceptable conditions?

My vote will go to eaquarist then.

    Have fun!

  5. katong area? which LFS u go to? is it that one next the parkway 7-11 or isit the marine parade market area that one(near the cake shop and the bookshop and the laundry shop) or is there another LFS? the one near 7-11 seems more careful on the fishes it stock although there is very little marine fishes, the other one seems much more enthu. which might be a good thing or otherwise....hint hint....

Well, I don't go to any LFS in particular. But in Marine Parade, yes, there's the one near 7-11 and next to bike shop. I don't know of one "near the cake shop and the bookshop and the laundry shop". In Marine Crescent, there'a new one too near the police station facing the main road.

There are others in Katong, Joo Chiat, Siglap too. They are sprouting up like wild mushrooms ....

  6. Thanks

Gotta have a word with those two LFS that told me its not available in Singapore.

Anyway, I also found out that attachment won't work on my first generation Prizm - so back to scooping water out from the top twice a week ....

lightningstrike Posted on Nov 3 2003, 05:55 PM

i've juz bought a prizm skimmer..... but dun hv any idea what the skimmer attachment is or filter bag is???? kindly enlighten me.....

    LS, see here: Prizm attachments

If yours isn't equipped with this or you cannot fit it as an accessory, then you need to figure out a way to remove the top level water where all the gunk collects.

  7. In my opinion, FW dips are beneficial.

    I employ this technique :

    A) all my newly acquired fish go through 5 mins FW dips before they go into a QT

    B) daily 5 mins FW dips for fish down with ick (together with copper) or marine velvet (together with hyposalinity - tried only once, didn't manage to save the fish though)

BUT, please remember the FW must be of the SAME PH and TEMP as the QT or display tank! Or the PH shock will probably kill it or weaken it further.

  8. Some notes for you to consider:

    1) No Tangs should be kept in any tank less than 4 ft regardless of size of fish. Tangs need lots of space to be happy.

    2) Mandarins won't live long in a tank your size that is only two months old. They are very unlikely to feed on prepared food (despite what you may hear from others). You need to provide live food (but not BS) that may come when your tank is more than a year old. I waited two years before I added one 2 cm specimen last week. Even then I still try to entice it to take mysis shrimp.

    3) Your damsels are aggressive feeders. I believe you probably used them to cycle the tank (which is absolutely unnecessary). It is likely your other fishes cannot compete with them for food.

    4) Marine Snow is just water with nonsense in them. No value to fish and corals.

    5) Personally, I would encourage you to dump your current tank and move up to a larger one, say 4ft. Larger tanks are move forgiving and you have more choices too. Your current tank can be a quarantine tank and this is where you keep new fish for between 4-6 weeks to make sure they don't carry any disease and that they are feeding before you introduce them to your show tank. Of course, they need to be accilimatised properly each time.

Your best bet is to read up more on fish compatibility, tank size and feeding habits before you spend anymore money. Free resources can be found in www.wetwebmedia.com, www.liveaquaria.com or search right here or at www.reefcentral.com

    Have fun :D

Thanks for the info man....... WHEN WILL IT BE OVER???!!!!

I may be wrong, but I think the actual APEC days are 21 and 22 Oct. Check the papers.

Most, if not all the 4 and 5 star hotels have been fully booked for the delegates too.

    FF

  10. If any of you are considering going to BKK next week, I suggest you postpone it. Its APEC week next week and due to security measures, you will face a lot of inconvenience. George Bush has a 3000 personnel strong security party there. If you're thinking of erotic fun or buying imitation branded goods, you will find less of it becuase the city authorities have been clearing them away to present a nice picture to the APEC delegates.

If you're thinking of going to Chiangmai or other Thai holiday spots, forget it too as half of Bangkok's residents are going away due to the inconvenience. They even closed the city's major hospitals to cater to the delegates. So, unless you're dying, you won't get proper medical attention as well.

  11. I've bought some drygoods from them (won't touch their LS though). The boss is friendly and helpful - no problems there. A couple of times, I had problems with products purchased from them (not product defects) and they willingly helped me to solve the problem (unlike some other more popular LFS).

And I prefer sales people to stay away from me until I have a question or need help - whether I'm buying fish, car or a house.

  12. Hi Cryptic,

I know nuts about eels but I thought I will jump in anyway.

Your intention - saving the eel - is good. No doubt about it. However, how many of these poor things will you be able to save? My opinion is don't buy sick/dying LS from LFS to save them. Most are beyond help and you are only helping the LFS to make money out of LS they could not or should not be selling. When their losses start mounting and hobbyists start to be more discerning about what they should put in their tanks, perhaps they will be more prudent about what they should be selling.

An analogy - giving a beggar money isn't always helping them. There are other ways.

  13. Hi Nutz,

I contacted a guy in the US who built it too. He used 1" ID pipes and estimated his flow to be approx 480gph (~1800lph). He ouwld like to have a higher flow, closer to 1200gph, but didn't know how. he did not want to build two of those because of space constraint.

So, how did you get the unit primed for first time use?

Did the siphon hold if you simulate a pump/electrical failure?

  14. GREAT NEWS :D

I'll just have one then - the smallest I can find. I used to have fish in this nanoreef but I moved them all to my FOWLR because I'm tired of always needing to hang around the tank to shoo the fish away whenever I feed the brain and bubble.

But how do I ensure there will always be sufficient pods in the tank? I don't want to feed BS as there's zero nutrition in them.

I remember back in SRC V1, I asked if if its possible to leave a small piece of shrimp in the tank as food for the pods. The reply I received was the shrimp will likely be food for the bristleworms instead. Does this still hold?

Jazzben81, I'm not sure how the plants fit in with food for mandarins. For me, I will not have plants .. if they die, they will mess up an 80 l tank big time!

    Thanks

  15. Hi,

I've always wanted a mandarin but could not provide its natural food. Well, I get the feeling the time for me to finally get one may be near ....

    Here's its home's specs:

    size - 80 l (oversized 2 footer)

current inhabitants - shrooms, polyps, one brain, one bubble, one CS, no fish, LR, LS

    filtration - prizm skimmer only

    established - since Nov 2001

water parameters - all OK except nitrates ~ 20ppm

There are dozens and dozens of pods on the sandbed, rocks and glass walls.

My question is how do I tell there will be enough pods to provide for one mandarin for its long term survival (not just a week or a month)?

    Thanks

  16. QUOTE

Better because it is simpler, but is this self-priming?

This system is not self-priming but it doesn't take much to start the siphon effect.

Pornstar, what I meant was if the power goes off, will the design self-prime when the power comes on?

    Posted on Sep 22 2003, 05:21 PM

I've seen this last year and I think its a logical design. Never tried it yet but it should work fine.

Ian, which design were you refering to? The funky looking one or the simpler one?

As for priming the funky one, I'd simply use a pump to 'force' water in. I do this to my SCWD closed loop to get it started after a water change.

    FF

  17. Do you have the design in other views?

I recall the site has an animated view. Problem is I cannot remember the address. Gotta dig around. Will see what I can find.

. As far as I know, there is no "+" connectors available.

    Ohh... can someone verify/confirm?

I frankly see no use of the '+' connector.

It looks an inlet to get the prime started and maybe later on a hole to stick a straw in to stop the gurgling sound if any. Also look like an outlet for excess water to flood the room!

But you may find this useful.

Better because it is simpler, but is this self-priming?

I'll see if I can find the old usenet threads on this. Its been a while since I came across this but didn't do anything because I was travelling most of the time.
