  1. Thanks brothers.

I appreciate all your advice but it is difficult to say more about my situation. But despite of my repeated effort to talk with them either calmly or through quarrel, they will never understand how I feel. They can never understand a passion. When you have a passion for something, you are willing to spend time, effort and money for it. But all they can see is that I am wasting my resources on something totally meaningless.

This is meaningless, they will never understand...never...I just have to live with that fact.

Anyway we quarrelled again today, this is no end to it...I just want everything to stop, just end this.

  2. Hi brothers,

I am damn depressed today. I had a quarrel with my parents again on my marine tank. Ever since I started reefing 2 years ago, my family has never been supportive of this hobby. Whenever I bought anything home - be it fishes, corals, equipment, they will also complain I spent too much effort, time and money on the tank. They will NEVER understand how is it like to take a hobby as a passion.

Today I bought a 2nd-hand chiller from a fellow reefer and when I brought it home, I was faced with their sarcastic and angry comments again. Even without helping me up to setup the things, they threw comments first such as,

"wait the power supply cannot take it ah, wait the power trips and fires burn down the house"

"wait the balcony too heavy, the entire balcony will collapse" - becos my tank is at the balcony

very stupid and unreasonable comments that I always have to put up.

Come on, have I killed someone or robbed someone? What I did is JUST TO BUY A CHILLER! Why do I have to take such comments everytime, why can't the family understand! I am really too frustrated and fedup. I run away from my house without setting up the chiller. I am damn depressed. I am tired. I am going to give up this hobby. What can I do anyway but give up...I am so disappointed with my family.

  4. hang ons usually have their pumps in the water which, like mentioned earlier by zeotz, affects the heat and aesthetics. Not nice to have just one pump hanging there right? Off hand the only 2 i can think of without pump in water is deltec mce600 and prizm skimmer. However, for a 4ft tank....i think its safe to say i'm better off with the deltec.

As to having a skimmer rated for a larger tank than yours, the result is overskimming. As for the goods and bads, some people have practises such as turning the skimmer off for 1-2 hours after feeding plankton and dosing elements coz they want it to be absorbed first.

There are more articles about overskimming in the forum...can go check it out.

    thanks for the advices...

hm...what about Weipro skimmer? Are they for hang-on too?

    also eyeing weipro 2013...good?

  5. Hi brothers,

    another set of questions :D

what is the recommended water flow for a 4 ft tank?

Is at 2000h/l good enough? I am thinking of having 3 powerheads in the tank.

1 is always on, the other 2 is on alternate controlled by timer - to create different current flow at different time of the day :)

    any comment?

  6. Hi brothers,

some questions on dry-wet filter :)

    1) Is dry-wet filter a common and recommended practice in marine setup?

    2) Have read a few articles on such filter, most are using bio-ball, bio-ring as media at the dry portion. So does it mean bio-ball should only be used at the dry portion? actually kinda silly becos I have been submerging bio-balls in the water all the while.

    3) If no dry-wet filter, through submerged media only is that sufficient?

    4) Havent seen a detailed plan on dry-wet filter, but since the water have to pass thru the bio-balls so there must be a way to "spread" the water over a larger surface right? Is a drip-box good for this?

    5) If use a drip box, should the sponges be above or below the holes of drip-box? < ok I know this is a silly question but want to be sure :paiseh:

  7. they only do it as a profit making business, they know nuts abt marine. fish come, dump in, die, scope up and throw.

But I dont understand why still have ppl go and buy livestock from that shop lor...look at the condition...

dead fishes...dirty water...dark dim tank and gosh...look at their display tank! is that a display tank at all! goodness... :(

  8. Not too sure if anyone mentioned that LFS in Yishun :P

It is really a very bad shop, just look at how they keep the fishes...so many dead fishes inside... so sad...

and they gave wrong information about the tank accessories too...

but it is still a shop with alot of accessories, so if you have done your homework it may be a good place to get something. Just dont listen to their recommendation...

  9. Hi brothers,

Recently found a few strange invertebrates on my tank side. Description of that creature:

    1) white in color

    2) around 1cm in diameter

    3) stick to tank side and can move slowly

    4) definitely look like a starfish...but seemed to have more than 5-6 arms... it has ard 7 or even 8 arms/legs...

Can it be baby starfish? But I doubt so because I have not intro any new coral or rocks in my tank. I do have 1 orange starfish but it is only an inch, doubt it is mature to have babies too...and alone...

Sorry dont have a picture. :erm:

  10. Hi, my own experience.
