  1. I am intending to keep a very shallow sand bed and vacuum it on a regular basis so effectively it is like a BB system. I am a little concerned on preparation of the live rock however. Did those that went from DSD to BB "Cook the Rock" as such?
  2. Hi I am considering changing my SPS tank from a DSB option to BB (or sand for aesthetic purposes only which would be vacuumed weekly) and wanted some comments from those that have already made the change in their tanks. 1. Are you happy with the change? 2. What have been the greatest benefits? 3. Are there any regrets? 4. etc etc I welcome all opinions. Thanks Sabella
  3. I am trying to decide on the lighting for my Refugium and wanted some opinions. Should I go with T5's or say 2 x 175 watt MH? Fuge is 4 x 2 x 2 Thanks Sabella

  6. Does anyone use the IKS controller? How do you find it? Sabella
  7. ATI make both the globes and the lighting unit however I think the lighting unit is not often imported. Is the Tek lighting unit a good T5 unit? Who supplies those locally? Regards Sabella
  8. Hi I am looking to acquire an ATI T5 Lighting Fixture with 6 x 54Watt T5 lights, reflectors and globes. Does anyone know where I could purchase an ATI unit or a ATI T5 Retro kit? Thanks Sabella

  14. Even Slight changes to tank conditions can result in Skimmer needing to be broken in again or stopping of skim process. This information was detailed at Barr Aquatic Skimmer going "nuts": Sometimes a skimmer will start foaming like crazy. This is normally due to a water change that it is just reacting to. The skimmer can pull gallons of water from the tank in a short time. Using an auto shut-off waste container will shut down the skimmer in this event, and is highly recommended. Things that can cause overflowing: Water conditioners Dead animals Live rock additions Disturbing large portions of a sand bad Conversely, the skimmer may shut down and have no foam at all for short periods of times. This can be caused by: Putting your hands in the water (oil on hands) Feeding oily foods (Mysis, sardines, etc) Cooking oily foods in the kitchen- The air sucked in to the skimmer may pull in oil too. You can add a floss air filter to the skimmer intake to mitigate this if it is near your kitchen.
  15. Is anyone familiar with with the performance?
  16. Starboard is a PVC Acrylic that is used for those tanks which do not like the look of BB glass. It is the same material used in chopping board however it is smooth as opossed to textured. Provides a good clean look which can be easily vacumed keeping the bottom of your tank white or some have used black.
  17. Hi Is anyone using any Oceanmotion products for their closed loop or various other water flow applications? I am looking to adapt the 4 or 8 way Oceanmotion to my existing closed loop and was looking for comments. Details are noted in the link below Oceansmotions web page Thanks Sabella
  18. Sorry maybe I have not been super clear with my question. I guess what I am asking is does the magnetic ballast drive the bulb harder, better, more PAR etc than an ellectronic Ballast would. I know that I am able to use either magnetic or electronic with this type of SE bulb, I am just looking to use the one that drive the bulb the best. Thanks Sabella
  19. Noone is able to comment on this globe and ballast? Sabella
  20. Hi I am looking to run an Iwasaki 400W and was wanting to know should I be using a Magnetic or Electronic Ballast for this globe? I read that the magnetic will give more PAR and is cheaper to purchase for this bulb, is this the case? Thanks Sabella
  21. Taking a more simple view I have one question - Given SPS need for very good water flow how is the required water flow achieved without creating a sand storm? How is long term water quality maintained with the build up behind your LR which becomes very difficult to syphoned away? A BB tank allows for the use of a powerhead and hose and blow out anything from behind the rocks where as this becomes very difficult with the DSB. Flow ultimatley is reduced. IMO BB looks unnatural and ugly but it seems a simpler long term approach. Sabella
  22. What are other reefers experiencing - greater polyp extension soon after feeding your corals or when there are lighting changes throughout the day?? Sabella
  23. True Bandit it is great to save in this expensive hobby. I just find my corals actually appear happier with a salt mix rather than natural salt water.
  24. Bandit You may actually want to try using a Salt Water mix in your tank for an experiment. I also have access to both but have found my corals respond better when I perform water changes using a good salt mix with RO water as opossed to natural sea water. Just a thought
  25. This article give a good indication of the Lumenarc Reflector v others: Reflector Test From what I read although the Lemenarc is superior it is not by an overly significant amount. Love to hear others thoughts. Sabella
