  1. Hi

I am considering changing my SPS tank from a DSB option to BB (or sand for aesthetic purposes only which would be vacuumed weekly) and wanted some comments from those that have already made the change in their tanks.

    1. Are you happy with the change?

    2. What have been the greatest benefits?

    3. Are there any regrets?

    4. etc etc

    I welcome all opinions.

    Thanks

  2. Hi

I am looking to upgrade my lighting system to a 400W 20K bulb and supplement it with either additional MH or T5 etc.

Does anyone have an opinion as to the best 400W 20K bulb on the market today?

Any help would be greatly appreciated

  3. Even Slight changes to tank conditions can result in Skimmer needing to be broken in again or stopping of skim process.

    This information was detailed at

    Barr Aquatic

    Skimmer going "nuts":

Sometimes a skimmer will start foaming like crazy. This is normally due to a water change that it is just reacting to. The skimmer can pull gallons of water from the tank in a short time. Using an auto shut-off waste container will shut down the skimmer in this event, and is highly recommended.

    Things that can cause overflowing:

    Water conditioners

    Dead animals

    Live rock additions

Disturbing large portions of a sand bad

Conversely, the skimmer may shut down and have no foam at all for short periods of times.

    This can be caused by:

Putting your hands in the water (oil on hands)

Feeding oily foods (Mysis, sardines, etc)

Cooking oily foods in the kitchen- The air sucked in to the skimmer may pull in oil too. You can add a floss air filter to the skimmer intake to mitigate this if it is near your kitchen.

  4. Starboard is a PVC Acrylic that is used for those tanks which do not like the look of BB glass.

It is the same material used in chopping board however it is smooth as opossed to textured.

Provides a good clean look which can be easily vacumed keeping the bottom of your tank white or some have used black.

  5. Sorry maybe I have not been super clear with my question.

I guess what I am asking is does the magnetic ballast drive the bulb harder, better, more PAR etc than an ellectronic Ballast would.

I know that I am able to use either magnetic or electronic with this type of SE bulb, I am just looking to use the one that drive the bulb the best.

    Thanks

  6. Hi

I am looking to run an Iwasaki 400W and was wanting to know should I be using a Magnetic or Electronic Ballast for this globe? I read that the magnetic will give more PAR and is cheaper to purchase for this bulb, is this the case?

    Thanks

  7. Taking a more simple view I have one question -

Given SPS need for very good water flow how is the required water flow achieved without creating a sand storm?

How is long term water quality maintained with the build up behind your LR which becomes very difficult to syphoned away?

A BB tank allows for the use of a powerhead and hose and blow out anything from behind the rocks where as this becomes very difficult with the DSB. Flow ultimatley is reduced.

IMO BB looks unnatural and ugly but it seems a simpler long term approach.
