  3. OIC... guess I have to stick to cichlid then.... Will be continuing to use my FR to reduce algae if I am going cichlid.... BTW, anyone here has experience with giant gouramis? Another plan I was thinking of was just to use driftwoods (without plants)....
  4. bro ervine, you wanna help me with this project? I stopping marine fishes altogether... In your opinion, which is lesser maintenance? 1) African cichlid tank - limestone caves with coral chip substrates? 2) Planted Amazon tank with discus and cardinal tetra? Now, my tank is 5' x 2' x 2' with overflow and sump using a MAK4 as return pump. What do you suggest? One thing for sure, if I going for planted amazon, I would have to remove my current crushed coral DSB.....
  5. Technically, I thought soil substrate has high nitrate... by dumping so much, wouldn't it cause a spike in nitrate levels (too high)... Sorry but when it comes to planted tanks, I know nuts... BTW, if I want to convert my marine to planted tank, I currently have Dymax t5 at 12000k spectrum? Can I just change the bulbd to 6500k spectrum? Wonder if they have that spectrum for Dymax T5s?
  6. Huh? I have a sump.... so why need a canister?
  7. Yo folks, As you all know, I have given up on marine and decided to go back to freshwater. Less time needed to maintain lah... I plan to go into malawi cichlid for several reasons: 1) I can still use back my current sandbed... 2) Colourful fishes still... 3) Least maintenance required... My plan is to remove my sandbed first and place an eggcrate to prevent toppling of the caves. And reduce my current marine DSB to a thinner layer. Removing skimmer also from sump compartment and will use coarse coral chips as natural filter + pH buffer (since cichlid needs ph of 8.0) I need to know if anyone got lobang for nice limestone or recommend a place where I can get cheap limestones to be used for the tank. (BTW, what sort of rocks will be good for an african cichlid setup?) Also, what are some of the shops that are more reputable in selling african cichlids (who know their fishes and can give advices)... Thanks!
  8. I am from Cornerstone... UPZZZ for sale....
  9. The crab feeds on detritus and leftover food... requires lot of leg space (on the sandbed). It is active in the night... by tomorrow, my tank is always cleared of detritus and leftover food.... good scavenger...

  12. That was what was happening to me.... my marine tank became my idol and pride in my life.... that should not be the way.... time is better spent elsewhere and in my case, it will be my walk with God.... Honestly, I will stick to 2 ft nanos and keep it easy if marine is still a passion...
  13. The cross before us, the world behind us... The cross before us, the world behind us... The cross before us, the world behind us... no turning back... no turning back... Thanks bro... my obsession with marine fishes has made me lose quality time with God and family... It is not the money but rather time. I really appreciate you bros for trying to dissuade me from giving up this hobby but seriously, my wife and I have gone through some thinking and we know what we are doing... Rather than "giving up", I rather say I have been released from this overly obsession with fishes. If it is gonna rob me of my time with God and all, then I rather remove it than have it... even though it is rather pitiful with all that investment. Hey, when Peter, James and John dropped off their nets (living hood) to follow Jesus, they did it wholeheartedly without calculating their initial investment losses in boats and fishing gears, rite? I have caught the same vision and going for something better too... Seriously, my wife and I are convicted into the "people" ministry and to serve the Lord in that manner. Helping others in their lives requires time and both of us are glad that we are called to do so... I don't want to cheat myself telling myself that if I managed my time well, I can cope and stuff.... honestly, MARINE FISH KEEPING requires a lot of time, energy and money.... I think this is something most of the lao chiaos have been advocating for a long time... Nope, I have not regretted picking the hobby up in the first place, honestly, this three years of reefing has been a wonderful experience to me. I have learnt so much about marine life and if you ask me, I take my money investment as tuition fee for the knowledge gained.... I will still come in once in a while to "ka chao ka chao" though and yeah, maybe in the future, once things are more settled down or if I shift to a new house (again), I may just go for a 2' cube FOWLR marine tank.. hehehe...
  14. Yo guys, Having much discussed with my wife, we have made a drastic decision to give up this hobby in view of new commitments. Yes, the decision was painful but we would like to free up more time to concentrate on new church responsibilities and family matters... Will be using my beautiful 5 foot tank to keep 200 cardinal tetras instead... I have the following livestocks and additives for sales.... pick up is tomorrow between 3pm to 6pm. Do pm me if you are interested. Remember, I will decide WHO I WANT TO SELL TO... sales is NOT on a first come first served basis. Pix of my livestocks will come up shortly... All my fishes are quarantined and copper treated for one month and more. So they are in great conditions (No more bargaining hor).... The fishes are still in the QT tank (copper removed) and can be picked up anytime. 1) Watanabei Male Angel (7 inch)- $70 2) Watanabei Female Angel (4 inch) - $60 ($120 for the pair) 3) Yellow Tang (4 inch) - $20 4) Sailfin Tang (5 inch) - $15 5) Fire Goby (3 inch) - $5 1) Spider Ghost Crab (Palm Size) - $20 each 2) 15 Spiny Shells - $2 each Live Rocks (50kg and more - $4 per kg) - Take all for $150 lah and I will throw in two free exotic brittle stars + 1 cleaner shrimp... 15. Fallow period extended for another month for doubly-kiasuism... Sorry fishes, you have to remain in QT for another month
  16. Haha... thanks for the compliment. Anyway, that's one reason why I stay clear of PBT or BT.... If possible, catch your fishes out and perform a hypo or copper treatment on your fish. If you are doing hypo, get a refractometer for accurate measurement of salinity. As for copper treatment, I recommend Seachem Cupramine coupled with a copper test kit. Please dun do any of the recommended methods on your main tank though. Do some read up in this section, there's already quite some discussion on ich prevention and cure. Good luck!
  17. 6 weeks is too little a period... if you ask me honestly. Please note that if you are leaving your tank fallow... It will have to be for a MINIMUM of 8 weeks for the ich to be completely eradicated. Patience is the essence of curing ich. Even for myself, I have decided to extend the fallow period of my tank for another month. So my main tank is fallow for a good 3 months. Fish release period will be on 12 July instead. Remember, all it takes is one virulent ich to spoil your earlier efforts. If you are planning to go fallow. Dun undercut on the duration...
  18. Wah..... like that your denitrifying bacteria also kena fry... As for Ozone, I am considering.... since I am using AquaC-EV240 as skimmer which has an ozone inlet pipe. BTW, roidan, how you connect your 3 UV together? Out of curiousity... All from one single pump? What is the flowrate you used? I heard it has to be real slow (200 gallons and below) for it to be effective against parasites...
  19. Thanks bro... Haha.... I know it sounds a bit kiasu... but I am not taking any chances... All it takes is one virulent remaining ich and my earlier efforts are gonna be wasted. I was considering the cost of the myaxzin as compared to what happens if all my fishes died on me again like the previous time (due to ich)... Technically, the boss gave me a very good discount when I bought all the five bottles. The total cost for the five bottles was cheaper than my one single watanabei angel alone... So the cost is well-weighted. Also thinking of extending the fish QT period for another 2 weeks to be extra sure.... hehe...
  20. Ok, as you guys know, I have left my tank fallow since 12 Apr... and my fishes are in quarantine receiving copper treatment... carbon absorption and water replacement has been done to lower copper levels in QT tanks. Fishes were also fed with a mix of cyclopeeze, mysis, Ocean nutrition pellets, nori, prawn roes which are soaked in pure beta glucen (10mg), vitamin C as well as garlic to boost their immunity... So what's gonna happen over the next 8 days? Well, this is what I have planned to ensure I kill off all ich remnants in the main tank... 1) Tee-off for UV steriliser (6x) running at trickle rate (to kill parasites). New 19 watt bulb. Oh yeah, previously was connected to FR but separate them so UV got dedicated slower flow rate of its own. FR still running through powerhead. 2) Siphoning the substrate at the bottom and doing 10% water change every two days since last week. 3) Lastly, Got 5 bottles of waterlife myaxzin which I will administer over the next 4 days in the main tank....
