yes, I am using and it is effective. But....I would suggest you try out refugium first. :)

Reason is (1) The nitrate reductor is not cheap, (2) It is not exactly maintenance free....well...sort of :D (3) It is not easy to tune the flow rate to the optimum point...It took 4 months of finetuning to bring my nitrate down to 10ppm.

oh yes, definitely no alcohol needed, only time that you would probably need alcohol is when you spent a lot on the equipment and yet your nitrate level is still high, you will need some alcohol for yourself to de-stress
