Live Copepods & Mysis from LFS

Hi,

We have all been taught that when new fishes or corals are to be included into the tank. That we should not allow the water in the transport bag (from LFS) to be poured into the display tank.

Main reason is to prevent introducing any possible free floating parasites into your tank.

But what about those live Copepods and Mysis Shrimps that are available from the LFS? How do we go about separating the pods/Mysis from the water, without killing them?

Its ridiculous to quarantine them right?

Appreciate if experienced reefers could give some advise.

Thanks.

Thanks Rudy, David,

If the pack contains much more pods or Mysis than the fishes can finish in one feed, is it advisable to still pour all in?

Would they survive in the tank considering they are not acclimated and thus will likely die shortly, thus fouling the tank. Or would they survive?

What's the normal practise?

Mine is just a 10G nano tank.

ah, we have a similar set up. the normal practise would be to use only what you need and put the rest in the refridgerator. pods should survive, if they are not eaten by the fishes, without acclimating. considering their size, i doubt they would be able to foul the tank

consider having a small hang-on refugium, place some chaetos, dump the pods in and let them breed. you'll never have to replace them again unless you have tons of pods-eating fish.

Moorish Idol has to be the most beautiful fish ever!
