How to select SPS?

Understand from the bros out there that things to look out for in selecting SPS are:

- To see if the base of the SPS has turned white

- if there are good polyps extension

- if it smells????

but quite franky, i'm still confused by some of guideline....for example, I purchase an SPS a few weeks back that has its base turning white, but the polyp extension was quite obvious...initially don't want to buy, but the young chap from the LFS assured me that it is normal and will recover in time....it turns out that he was quite right and the SPS is now doing well in my tank....

Brough another nice colored one...this time round no turning white at the base, good polyps extension, no smell ....etc.....but after 2 weeks it is begining to peel off and turn white at the based....don't really think its the condition of my tank as all the other SPS seems to be doing ok....

so any bro out there have similar experience? or care to share how they select their SPS?
