White spots on Foxface Rabbitfish

Recommended Posts

My first marine tank so im absolutely lost.

So my foxface died just now and looking at the corpse there's a few white circles on one side of it (see attached). On the last day it was not even swimming or feeding, but just being blown by the flow until it eventually just stopped moving its fins/gills and I presumed it was dead. Had it for like a little over a month.

I've read that white dots could be marine velvet or ich. Not sure which one is this.

My question now is... what should I do about the tank? Do I need to disinfect it with something? I have some anemones (RBTA, Sebae), an occelaris clown, a yellow belly damselfish, a cleaner shrimp and 2 blue eyed cardinalfish.

I took a look at the other 2 fishes and they don't have any symptoms. Feeding normally and active around the tank. No white circles.

The only recent change I did was adding some RBTAs about a week or so ago.

Sorry for your loss. Based on the first picture, those white spots are too big to be ich. They look more like lesions possibly caused by something else in your tank, perhaps anemone stings.

I would monitor the other fish in the meantime and check whether they develop similar white patches on their body. If they’re doing fine, I would leave the tank alone.

Also, how big is your tank? If you have a smaller tank with anemones in it, could be that the rabbitfish was stung by an anemone while trying to swim around in a small space. They are active swimmers after all. Just a thought.

How about an overall pic of the tank before any further comments?

97 gallon display, 13 gallon sump. The other fishes are tiny and there's a lot of swimming space. Maybe the foxface was just not careful...?

With such ample space, it needs a freak accident for it to stumble into the anemone. Maybe, judging by its darkened coloration at death; could be a case of poisoning. Not sure if they still bring in cyanide-caught fish. Those caught by cyanide usually thrive for a period and then that's it!
