Coralife or ME - which shoots up NO2??

Hi all,

How many of you reefers are using other marine salt besides Coralife? Was told that Coralife salts are not very good as they contain higher than normal levels of nitrates. Is that true?

Seems to be true cos my Nitrate levels do not seem to be heading south. Although i did not perform a water change, still cycling for about 1 week, I added in a whole bottle of Bacteria solution (Stress Zyme) to aid in the lowering of the NO2.

Furthermore, if I were to change the water, need to use Coralife salts to maintain the salinity. ...NO2 gonna shoot up again right?

How? Should I just dump Coralife salt and use Marine Environment?

Then again......what else can i do to bring down my NO2. Am using RS skimmer with Jebao cannister filter.

Please advise

It's only one week of cycling, just let it cycle and don't worry about the nitrite now.

Test your water parameters after another 2 weeks.

Don't change water during cycling, you may change 20% of water after the cycling is done before you add in LS.

As for the Coralife salts, you can test it yourself after mixing to see if it contains any nitrates. The nitrates probably come from your tap water unless you are using a RO/DI unit.

Btw NO2 is nitrite not nitrate.
