Reposted: NO3- Spike

Recommended Posts

hi,

I am guessing it could be my missing anthias, probably die and rotted by now.

Last week NO3- was <10ppm, this week is between 50 to 100ppm. Even if it is a dead, fish, I begin to suspect that it can cause so much damage. I have a 5.5ft"/150g tank. [and I am using the same selifest test kit for these tests]

Back to dosing AZNO3- again, and took out all my ceramic media and bio balls. Totally empty my filter box.

I am going to let my sandbed and some LR to be overtaken by algea for this week and hope to suck them all up [and wash my cannister] next weekend. hopefully, this algea can help me 'eat' up the NO3- ?

I have a small refu with "grape" plant.

Anyone has any clue on why this NO3- problem keep happening ?

Immature sand bed and excess feeding?

There are many steps you could take to reduce no3...

1> Change water

2> Reduce feeding, many reefers feed once every 2-3 days and in small amts

3> Use more powerheads to blow out detritus trapped in the rocks

4> Plant more macroalgae in the refugium

5> Use a better skimmer, lesser nutrients, lesser no3

6> reduce fishes

7> give more time for your sandbed & rocks to mature?

8> Add more rocks in the sump/maintank?

But the one I would really discourage you would be to use AZ-no3, I sued that b4 and the results have been :(:(:( No3 down but corals suffer!! Lost quite a few precious gems... :(

thanks!

Here's some update:

a. My tank is 15 months old and sandbed is 5-6". I think the problem could be the cumlative of rubbish trapped in my sump and filter box. I clean them out 1 month back. And I have remove all my ceramic media yesterday. hope that will solve the issues

b. I found one of my clam in the heat yesterday. He being spewing lots of sperms. That could have resulted in the sudden spike

Thanks gurus! I will change water again

I changed 10% of the water after I saw it spawning. Previously, I drop the lights to be 6" from the water where it used to be 10" away.

anyway, now my giant squasmos is behaving strangely. It is pinching when the lights is on, and it is gaping when the lights are off. I just hope that it wont die this few days while I am out of town :(

damn scare now!
