I believe halogen is too orangish (incorrect spectrum) for a reef tank, and not efficient in terms of energy usage.

MH lamps has a lumen output that is double that of Mercury Vapor lamps of the same wattage. MV lamp's advantage is that they offer long life.

halogen light spectrum is unsuitable for reef tank and if you think MH is hot? wait till you try it with halogen. They puts out an awesome amount of heat even at half the wattage of a MH; and the light seems more suitable for lighting up the roasted duck at hawker centre :D .I ever ponder upon using them cos at the local DIY store, its only about $30 for the fixture and around $20 for a 150w DE style bulb... but drop the idea then.
