New FOWLR Tank

I'm comtemplating a new 4 feet FOWLR tank. One issue I can't decide is whether to go DSB or BB for this tank. I like the look of DSB but prefer some of the new found benefits of BB tanks.

Below are some questions I have. Please assume I use a strong skimmer and sump for both scenarios.

- Is this DSB vs BB debate a big deal for FOWLR tanks? Does it really matter in the long run?

- How about this idea - After arranging my LR in tank, I lay a very thin layer (eg. less than 1/4 inch) of fine sand on glass bottom just for aesthetic reasons. When I perform my water changes monthly, I siphon up entirely this thin layer of sand and washed them in fresh water before laying them back in tank. This is to remove detritus completely for maintenance. Do you think this method is detrimental to the LS? Or it is a good compromise between DSB and BB?
