Difference between Live Rock and not-so-alive rock

can someone show me the difference (in pictures) the difference between a very "alive live rock" and "a not-so-alive live rock". I know the coralline alage and things but is it ok to assume that live rock is normally covered with a red-ish colour? while a dead live rock is not? Pls advise. I will sent pictures tomorrow afternoon when I come back home with digital camera.
