Keeping Cowfish / Boxfish.

Recommended Posts

Have always been interested in this family of fishes.

But never bought one because wary of the fact they will secrete toxin when stressed ..which will kill the whole tank !!

Anyone has experiences/tips to share keeping them ?

Current tank has Triggers (2) / Grouper / Moray / Lions (2)

Bad idea ??

Besides releasing toxin when stressed, Boxfishes are another from of itch magnet.. whats worst is they are not really tolerant to most itch medication. its like they are some sorta invert or something.

maybe they belong to a group of fishes like sharks and eels where their skin are different from normal fishes...

they are cute though.. interactive fishes and they squirt water.. :P

Why do we use "My 2 cents worth" when 1 cents are not legal tender in Singapore anymore? Shouldn't it be 5 cents worth?

they are cute though

That's an understatement ....

I believe many an aquarists' girlfriend has fallen in love with this family of fishes ...

And I really feel like trying one out in my tank ...

The only worry of course ...is the toxin ....

So no one ever tried Boxfish with Triggers ????

if you have a big tank with good flow I dun see why.. 1 wouldn't kill..

but beware if itch.. esp if you have Tangs.

Missing ?

Any aggressive fishes in your tank ?

Thought boxfish were pretty ok at taking care of themselves.

Had a Bangai Cardinal once ...(full grown) ...

Went missing after 30 mins ......never saw it again ...haha

  • 2 weeks later...

ANyways ....bought a small cowfish ...

Was doing fine ....wasn't afraid of any other fish ..

And it hated my moray ...kept chasing it back into the rocks ...

It was feeding fine too ....

Then about a week later .....

One night I noticed it had a broken horn ....

Then it died the next morning ......weird .............
