  1. Hi all, I have a hybrid trigger to sell, it is a hybrid between Melichthys indicus and Melichthys vidua not a rare hybrid but highly uncommon..

It is stable and eating like a pig, I am currently housing it with henry and eats a lot, it is housed with damsels so relatively safe with fishes that cant fit its mouth, good for fish only tank or predator tank..

I do not have a photo of it now.. but below is a photo from the net, the definition of the black marker fins are not so defined but can tell it is a hybrid.. You can view the fish at Marinelife when you visit henry.. I will take a photo when I drop by Marinelife..

I am looking at around $160 for it.. Still negotiable, it is not a fish you can find easily if you are into fish only tank..

  2. Is there any treatment for fish affected by cyanide?

From what I know, there are fish certified to be caught without cyanide. However when I ask for the certification, most of the fish shop owners either don't know what I'm talking about or claim it takes too much effort to get the certification. I've also heard of fish harvested under supervision from the marine aquarium council.

Would you know if there are sources for such sustainable fish in SG?

The only shop that I know is recognised by MAC is coralfarm as they export various locations in US.. Their quarantine facility is up to MAC standards which I think other lfs dun practice much quarantine procedures..

I think most regional collectors and supplier used cyanide to a certain extent as it is easier to get the cryptic species..

Sadly no cure for cyanide once it gets to the point where you can see any signs it is already too late..

  3. Terryz I understand what you mean. For me it's like this. Needling fish should never be done, staged decompression is safe and natural. I have caught Kingis and decompressed them over 2 days and when I pulled them up they are bloated and can't swim properly. Then I drop the deco line back done and start again. Take Peppermints for example, a bunch of them died, I don't know from what but it would be interesting to see how they do if they were brought up over a number of days. Not something I would try, you don't do it right then things can go bad.

I do agree it is the safest and natural way without any invasive method to the fish and understand why you stand by it completely..

  4. How do you know they swim away safely? Infection takes time to show and is a long process. Needling is very risky, I know certain guys say yes it's fine the fish will recover, etc but this is not always the case. I practice staged decompression, it's natural way, allowing the fish to release the gas build up over a period of time. Much safer.

But there are some fishes even with stage decompression they are still unable to survive and needling is the only way, risky but sometimes with good results.

  5. I saw them kept before in osaka aquarium before, really cool fish! Not sure how trawlers bring them up alive. If I can get hold of one I will set up a tank specially for it with a compressor chiller to reach that temp

They are not there anymore, I just went there last year june.. They normally are by catch and so if they survive they earn from it if not then they dun lose anything either their main income is from the foodfish that they trawl up.

  6. Thanks Terryz_ for all your help! Really appreciate having advice from an experienced keeper such as yourself.

Was wondering if its normal for them to go on periods of fasting for a day or two? One of mine is currently not eager to eat any of the mysis I put in the tank at night, when yesterday he was eating voraciously. He does not switch on his light like the others either but apart from that he looks ok.

Give it a few more days.. but a healthy one it should open its light.. unless it is being spooked by something or stressed or sick..
  7. There is an optimum cooling rate for the light tubes. Too little or too much actually reduced the light tubes performance. Best to cool the tubes at the side & never at the center, if u intend to cool down the tubes as well.

This is new, I didnt know.. I used to cool them becos it is in a enclosed hood.. So I need to get the heat out.. but I guess if it is open concept the temp should be within the the optimal?

  8. Ballast for longer ballast life as they have a optimal runing temp.

Light tubes for dispersing the heat from the t5s to the tank, I dun think there is any effect on the performance as the tubes still need to be replaced in a year.

But are you using it on a existing fixture or a new diy set.
