  1. Not all milleporas got white growth tips. It's mainly the pink or salmon pink or RED milleporas that have the white growth tips but not necessary the rule. There are some with blue growth tips, think the pink with blue growth tips one, very much sought after. Purple normally have blue or purple growth tips. Green or yellow have lime green growth tips. Blue will normally have light blue growth tips.

So your mille is growing ok bro. :)

  2. Bro, this is the monti cap from Jon -closeup, some of the photos taken under MH 150W 20k and some under actinics, if i remember correctly, this is taken under 20k and it's not directly under the lights so it's getting more of the shade of blue/purple.....it's of a coraline purple in true color..... :paiseh: i think it's time to change my MH bulb.....seems to be getting dimmer liao....

OIC it now when I compare with the zoos at the top corner of your pix. I saw the polyp so big, I stun a while. Very macro shot eh?

  3. yup... very satisfied with the performance.. but pocket very big hole... more than my one month pay.. <_< but this type of things cannot save 1... glad i got it rather than headache over how come cant cool down.. much quieter than my previous some more..

Congrats bro. Good choice! Now can sleep better right??

RAV, I heard you are going the same direction also??? :P

  4. Hi all, I don't mean to be long-winded lah (post everywhere also talk about water change :lol: ) but frequent water change is the way to go. Weekly is excellent, why not? Even every 4 days, like what RAV-65 mentioned, when you have problems. No matter how small the quantity you change, it will help in replenishing the good and diluting the bad.

If ever you redesign a new tank, always consider it for the ease to do water change like incorporating drain off valves and easier top up mechanism, especially for big tanks. The easier water change is done the more encouraged you are to do water change.

So this weekend being a long weekend, get off your butt and do the long awaited water change.:P

And use the correct type of water, RO/DI or distilled is recommended.

  5. 650 for electricity bills but how much of it is for the fish tank?

Bro you think I running factory at home ah?

Normal usage about 250. Fish tank I estimate about 150 to 200. Now my PUB bills averagely about 420. It is that one month that went to 650 because of the chiller.

Since changed for a year already, the bills has been quite constant.

  6. Bro, your 1/2 hp wat chiller is dat? Btw like abit thin, plus pump too weak... I tink... :P

Different chiller the hp rating not consistent. When I started my tank, I use one local product chiller called Eido. Rating 1.25hp :shock: That time I running 2x150W only. Thought sure super efficient and over kill one. 1.25 hp what for a 3.5 feet tank. Then I find the chiller (with a built in pump) runs for a long time, about 1.5 hours to cool 1 degree. So thought maybe normal. Then........I upgrade to 2x250 and 1x150, the bloody chiller run non-stop when my lights are on.:blink: Worse still found out the supplier went bust and nobody to service the chiller. That month my PUB bill went to 650 bucks :pinch::pinch: .

So hp rating doesn't guarantee performance!!!!

  7. i also dun get it, thats why so stressed...

got someone to top up gas, still cant work, brought back to supplier to change a new temperature controller and probe, still cant work....

mine is a supposed 1/2 hp chiller

    410W cooling power

    240W electricity power

even lights off from 1am to 1.30pm still unable to cool down. Anyone care to help me?:bow::thanks:

    Lights : 2 x 250W DE MH + 2 x 39W T5

    Pumps :

    1 Ehiem 1262 (return)

    1 Rio32 (beckett)

    1 small 600L pump (FR/CR)

    1 15W OceanFree pump (Chiller)

    1 TS7 Tunze

    1 1200 Maxijet

    1 SeioM820

Change the chiller. Don't trial and error when come to chiller. 2 to 3 hours of high temperature and you can say bye bye to your SPS. We have spent too much money on stocking than to ignore the defect in a chiller.

  8. I'm changing 5% everyweek and I find that it is good enough. I have a 100 gallon tank so 5 gallon water change every week using the red pail. Stop the skimmer and let the excess water flow into the sump and just suck from the sump or the main tank. I don't switch off any of my return pumps, so no problem with forgetting to on chiller later. Clean the skimmer cup and off we go. However reefers with bigger tanks or very small sump will have problem doing it this way. You will have no choice but to switch of your pumps. If you change 5% only, you must be hardworking and change every week in order for the water change to be effective. Cannot skive. B)

Run a good skimmer, suitable in comparison with your livestock. You don't have to overkill your skimmer if your LS do not need such low nutrient water.

I feel that water change is more for replenishing the trace elements on top of reducing NO3, PO4 etc. I have undetectable NO3 and PO4 but still do weekly water change to replenish the trace elements. Major elements such as Ca, Mg and Alk need weekly monitoring, sometimes water change not enough to replenish them so dosing or a well tuned CR is required. Also suggest test your major elements weekly. Use RO/DI or distilled water for water change so as not to introduce unwanted components into your tank. Untreated tap water can be troublesome.
