  1. amount of lr in a tank also depend on the quality of LR u get.. if u get all dead rocks den it does not serve much purposes... get those very good quality lr such as fiji rocks and you may need less....

you may also want to consider the amount o rocks according to your intention for the tank. eg you may wish to build towers so that some of your corals can get more of the lights for good health.

  2. Normally we would leave the lights for our tanks from 8-12 hours and I leave them on for about 11 hours a day. Was wondering if it's possible for us to switch the lights on in 5 hours shifts, then off it the next 3 hours and then on for another 4 hours or something?Has anyone tried alternative lighting hours other than 8-10hrs stretch? Please share your opinions on this.

The main reason why I am bringing is up is that some of us have to work really long hours and might be out of home for more than 12 hours some times and by the time we reach home, the lights are already shut off and we might not be able to look at our tank until the next morning.

  3. it's a sea pen.

i have one for many months now, one of my very first addition to my tank. Quite hardy in my opinion and I just dose some DT live planktons to it occassionally. It would find a nice comfortable area and dig into the sandbed. after 8 hours of opening it would slowly deflate itself and disappear into the sand. "now u see it, now you don't!"

  4. I added marine salt directly into the sump/ refugium without mixing it with water first. The salt burnt the calupera and killed them. I was complacent and forgot that I was no longer running a traditional sump alone.

    oh i see...

i am quite ignorant about the caulpera and other macroalgae and i have an idea they so called become asexual and thus leading to deaths to the LS in the main tanks...hmm...den doesn't it turn asexual too in the refugium?

  5. You people are die-hard reef keeper.

Instead of running out of the building, you guys keep staring at your tank. :o

I won't be surprise if some of you start lifting and carrying your tanks to safety. :pinch:

nah.... believe that they are more likely covering the tank with some hood or trying to empty the safe to push the tank in... :P

  6. Bubbles are bulletproof. If you can have them dying on you there is something very very wrong with your water. I have kept one for years under normal 6500K FL lighting. Recently put it under T5s...now it's sold to someone. Total time i kept it = more than 2 years.

i think Octopuffy should read this... :P

  7. The marine tank at 101D, 5th storey, can be viewed from the coffee shop across the road is a 6 by 2.5 by 2.5 tank custom build into the wall partition, the wall acts as a divider between the dinner hall and one of the bed rooms (but converted to study room). So the tank can be viewed from both sides.

His tank drainage system for water change is laid beneath the floor tiles to his toilet. Very well designed and nicely setup tank. Tank glass thickness is 15mm. I heard from him that contractors go to his house to build the tank up.

The tank owner is my secondary school classmate but too bad he doesn't come here.

wahhh.... no wonder you know so much..heeeeeeeeeeee...

for a second i thought you have followed the reefer secretly & studying the tank daily from de kopitiam..:lol::lol::lol:

  8. not sounds like.. it IS the army's theory..

anyway.. I dun understand the influx of reefers trying to get 'free' sand from our shores.. Why the 'cheapo' attitude? .. if you are not really gonna commit, then dun start in the first place..

I don't agree with your statements.

Yes, it might be a so-called 'cheapo' behaviour but 'cheapo' does not equate to irresponsible reefers (at least it does not indicate the amount of time or attention he devotes to his tank) and buying the most expensive equpiments or chemicals also do not mean the person is very responsible. Hence, it got nothing to do with commitment.

If you get hand-down clothes or clothes, that does not mean you are cheapo or non-committal.

  9. I have but remove all mechanical filters for my 450 lit tank. Using 20 LR, DIY Fluidised sand bed, PS and sandbed. Zero Nitrite, <5PPM Nitrate. 10 fishes and anemone, star fish, sea apple, mushroom and leather corals.

The other benefit is that the sea apple and anemone get foods!

I am trying to get mangrove plants to filter nitrate, metals and phosphate. Let me know if you know a source.

wah...sea apple! i rem the first time i saw a sea apple i was very amused....find it look so much like a mouldy peach and not apple... so isn't it difficult to keep a sea apple? what does it feed on?
