  1. In terms of intensity n spectrum, nothing beats Mother Nature. Years ago, in the Today's Aquarium magazine, I saw an article featuring a shallow 5' plus aquarium displaying fish, corals and macroalgae under just a pair of ordinary Phillips cool white 840s. Is it because of the right spectrum?

  2. yup red one at the front is red bamboo, the green one is chaeto. How is urs like beehoon? the colour?

Every now n then, when the return water from the skimmer hits it, the chaeto ball will rotate. But when I pulled the ball apart, the algae is like long thin thread-like strands of hair. That's why I describe it as beehoon. The colour is dark lime green.

After a while, the strands will compact into a ball n start rotating again. It's really interesting!

  3. I have started my ats n refugium for about a month. Had some die of for my chaeto initially. But soon it reached an certain size and just maintain there. Now have undetectable nitrate and phosphate. Also can see quite a few pods in chaeto. Also have a bamboo algae with it

Well, see u have achieved ur goal. Then keep it this way. S 4 me I don't mix my refugium with the ATS.

  4. U'd be better off using the green mussels, scallops and clams sold at the local wet markets. The last time I hrd of cockles being used was by the Primary Production Department to breed long-clawed freshwater crayfish. It goes something like this: First chop up the meat. Next wash off the blood. After that, use a sieve to separate the finely cut up stuff before feeding according to size of the crayfish. N one needs to remove the leftovers not to mention the waste matter of the crayfish.

If 4 fishes, such a situation is a big advantage for an ich outbreak (my opinion n past exp.)

    Good day.

  5. Hi there,

I 've also used the above cure for my fishes after dabbling with the other brands in the market. The dilution could be due to a different formulation viz. old stocks.

The main thing to note is that u need to use an alternative medication to stop the adverse reaction after the completion of the treatment.

The fins of some of the fishes started to fray (N.B.It's on the bottle that one needs to take note)

So I used a medication by Api to save the fishes.

The result: Some were saved but some still died.

I'd still use Aquapharm (my own opinion) should I get an outbreak of white spots.

    Good luck.

  6. flow i really not sure....lol can i say that the flow rate is the same as my return pump since i am relying on the natural flow within the sump? if so it would be ard 4000 litre

    .

hm thought i saw santa monica thread was using cotton or maybe read wrongly.

sorry for the slow reply had to deal with anemone shake today in tank.....

O ya actually this ATS can be bought at 328...the carbon filter for freshwater overhanging fitler. i just cut a hole in the bottom to empty out the carbon content washed and use. It can also float on the water surface which is why mine just nice stay in that position i guess without using glue or clips. Hope it works den can easily get a ATS at less than $10 i think...not sure coz bought long ago just happen to stumble onto it again.

    Hi there again,

Though u r using the horizontal method (I wuz using it initially) it'll still be better if u use one of those plastic netting from the hardware store. Mine's green in colour. Scraping the surface to roughen it will definitely get better results.

Since u've read Santa Monica's threads, maybe u should try 2 get those red leds used by him. His floating ATS is a prickly plastic box with the threads to enable the algae to grow vertically for better light penetration and easier harvestinng.

  7. Been trying to get a ATS to fit into my tank for some time and finally thought of trying this out:

    attachicon.gifIMG_4064.JPG

No3 has yet to go down after a week of using but just wanted to be sure that the ATS is setted up correctly since the algae seems more...reddish brown than green as i see in the videos for ATS.

from what i read i just need light and flow on the ATS for it to work right? currently depending on the the light for the cheetos (lumen aqua led). flow wise i am tapping onto the natural flow in the sump. or did i seed it with the wrong algae?

    Hi fren,

From what I know, u need a piece of roughened mat (use a knife with a scraping edge or a hacksaw blade) and warm white light. If u get blue green algae within a week, then u need stronger lighting.

  8. Hi guys,

Get a load of this. My ATS is a Ferorro Roche chocolate box with a 20mm piping and a hardware shop matt. It is lighted by two 25w Panasonic warm white and on for 14h daily. A Big Boy supplies the water input. The growth is fantastic and I harvest every fortnightly.

    How's that 4 a cheapo diy!

  9. Hi folks,

One thing's 4 sure, the ATS really works if one gets the right combo--see Santa Monica's write-ups. Currently using a diy with a transparent plastic box and original pipe n hanging mat lighted by two Panasonic CFL 25w warm white. The whole set-up's hanging in the sump.

Try it n enjoy the latest revelation in marine aquaria.

I salute Santa Monica 4 showing me a new way 2 enjoy this hobby!

  10. IMO the WP40's a real performer. Currently using in a 4' tank and downsized to DC12v n has been running on different modes since buying it from fellow reefer Cherm without a hitch.

    Have fun.

  11. Hi,

One of the greatest culprits of ich is 'stress'. Never put new fishes into the main tank. Not even those u just obtained from another fellow reefer. I've always placed my new acquisitions in my sump and wait until they r calmer and eating well. Sometimes, even in the sump disaster occurs viz. in fightiing....but though death occurs, the others that survive make it to the main tank.

Currently my sump has a 9" Lo, a 6" blue tang, a black ocellaris, two cardinals and a fat powder blue.

    Cheers,

    Finbir.
