ya boy....MH plus fan with make lots of water evaporate. remember when i 1st started : no fan, no MH & no chiller, the evaporation is already noticable in 2days as u can see the watermark on top of the current level. Most reefers on their MH for about 6hrs per day, so u need to supplement it with other lights. I using T5 from 9am to 10pm while my MH comes on from 12-6pm. In this way it will also stimulate normal sun rise & dawn with afternoon the brighest.....think i'll try DIY moonlight later..........

hihi, Juz b4 u buy MH. best to have a chiller as MH is v v hot. Otherwise, ur corals & clams will suffer......juz my 2c worth to the newbies. Not sure anyone used MH successfully without a chiller...anyone???

If u r willing to part with 200 bucks, go for 150W. Beside Vxxxxxn, i think no one else sell 70W MH. So replacement will be a worry if they also stop bringing it in.

Hi pangz..........guess your T4 is 55w (from CR) as there r not many T4 out there beside CR. Frankly, T5 is just sufficient only & u must put the clams high up especially smaller clams (3 inch & below). Anyway, T5 doesn't comes cheap except Dymax. However, it will not be as bright as CR's T4. Advice, go for 2nd hand chiller & MH (150w will do since your tank is 2feet only).

Thanks bro. I know u r a DIY expert. So wat do u recommend? any shortcut?? BTW, I have an external box with everything done. The only thing i short of is the casing for the 150W SE bulb. U think i can use those downlights casing (eg. those we saw in resturants fitted in the false ceiling, it is silver in colour & dome shape)? Or u think my old metal studying lamp (the SE bulb can be screw into the ordinary bulb holder too!!)?

Hihi, I'm thinking of getting a PL case & modified it to fit my MH (fyi : the ballast & etc will be house in an external box). My concern is than will the heat of the MH too hot for the PL casing as it seems most bro here DIY their own MH casing using wood. I'm a v lousy craftman & lazy too, that's why I rather get something to modify than start from the scratch. Can anyone help or anyone selling MH casing? Thanks.

Some of the reefers here bot from Sinter at Sim Lim Tower (not Square). It is at the 3rd floor. FYI : I have been there 3 weeks ago & he got no more left. So it is better if u can call him. I dun have his number, u got to check up the directory urself.

as for the tubes.....depends which brands -ATI, D&D, Glare & Zoo. Most reefers here seem to like ATI but think Glare is the cheapest (i don't know as I haven't bot any from Glare). ave price should be around 50 bucks.

DIY definitely cheaper Eballast I got my eballast from fellow reefers here after I when down to Sinter at Sim Lim Tower & found that they have no more Osram eballast. Brand new should be 60+. If u can find reefer selling, probably 1/2 price. Casing Bot mine at 30+. It is a normal PL casing. Note : look for big casing as eballast is much longer than the ordinary ballast. If u don't mind v simple design (without casing), juz get a reflector from Octxxxx Bxx & drill hole to fit in the T5 stuff. End Caps & clip Depends - waterproof caps r more expensive. Otherwise, a few bucks only from lighting shops. Clips - v cheap but can remember the exact price. should be not more than 2-3bucks for 4. Steps r pretty simple - take out the PL stuff & fit in the T5 stuff. Difficult part is connecting the wires but there's diagram on the eballast to show u. So take ur time & becareful.

I have used CR's T4 PL 55w & Dymax T5 together b4. T4 is brighter but hotter, however, it doesn't have actinic blue effect. Dymax T5 is not exactly actinic as I'm now using a DIY T5 with D&D T5 tubes & did a comparison. Dymax is juz blue lights IMO.

I'm using both DIY & Dymax T5. Dymax is definitely dimmer than the others due to its lower wattage. I have tried using D&D tubes on Dymax too, it is still dimmer than my DIY D&D. Hence, I'm using Dymax to stimulate morning & dawn effects where it comes on 1st & switch off last (using actinic & aquablue tubes) so that the LS doesn't get a rude shock as it is dimmer & they can slowly adjust when my DIY comes on 1hr later. However, if u r thinking changing its eballast, the casing is too small to house it. Unless put it externally.

To be sure that it is heathly. turn the clam upside down & see its mantle. there shouldn't be any hole opening up. Also, if the shrimps keep pestering it, another sign that the clam is dying. IMO shrimps r one of the earliest ones to detect the clams r dying & feast on them.

Here's some answers to most of the common questions asked about the chiller : 1. Noisy? Yes, a little. It depends on the individual. some can live with it some say a bit noisy. It is the sound of the fan that is causing the noise. Remember somemone mentioned about replacing the fan with another brand in the DIY forum. Well, to be honest this is a budget chiller, so u can't compared it to those expensive ones. Anyway, its main function is to cool down the temp, in this aspect it is performing up to its job. 2. Can cool up to what size? Best 2-3feet tanks. Although my fren (planted tank) says can cool his 5feet to 25. I suspect it is because he doesn't use MH.

Clams, clams, clams..............go to Coral Ark if u r looking for clams. I have went down & they got about 80-100 clams, all sizes. Prices r v reasonable. But better call them (phone no. in their forum) b4 u go......I was waiting for CA to come back from his movie (TROY) when i went down to his place last nite. but it is worth the wait.

Soorie My fren made a mistake, it is CL280. lower price to $200 (he bot $400). anyone still keen? BUT he manage to cool his 5feet tank to 25-26 degree......

It is MPM CO2 regulator with bubble counter plus valve control (anti-reverse). Hope this is sufficient.
