  1. hey mr_xxx, hopefully after a break, u can find inspiration to come back into the hobby again! we all need our time outs, i guess now's as good a time to take a breather. I'm sure all reefers will look forward to you coming back stronger
  2. 10mm should be fine. I kiasu, 12mm after my previous tank experience which cracked (8mm), decided to just play safe... As for black or white silicon, its just a matter of asthestics and taste. I personally prefer black to keep in line with my black oyama.
  3. i feel for you bro... my tank also flooded my living room last month... was so demoralised. hope you will continue in this hobby, really enjoy your beautiful reefing and photography skills.
  4. hmm oki, top up $50? mine is almost brand new, bought from AM last month
  5. borrow your thread bro, just wondering, anyone uses Prime to tap water before adding salt mix? Product description "Prime® is the complete and concentrated conditioner for both fresh and salt water. Prime® removes chlorine, chloramine and ammonia. Prime® converts ammonia into a safe, non-toxic form that is readily removed by the tank’s biofilter. Prime® may be used during tank cycling to alleviate ammonia/nitrite toxicity. Prime® detoxifies nitrite and nitrate, allowing the biofilter to more efficiently remove them. It will also detoxify any heavy metals found in the tap water at typical concentration levels. Prime® also promotes the production and regeneration of the natural slime coat. Prime® is non-acidic and will not impact pH. Prime® will not overactivate skimmers. Use at start-up and whenever adding or replacing water."
  6. lol alot of bros here selling off their lightings at v. good prices have plenty of options!
  7. he already asked le... patience bro! i'm also interested in finding out and i agree, bro chris, should post your questions in the relevant section rather than pasar malam. believe this isn't the first time
  8. just to confirm, is yours k1 or nano? as in 1500l/hr or 900l/hr?
  9. bro how old is your nano? I have an almost new k3, but need to top up of course. you interested?
  10. You can try this place. I find his prices for Eheim filters to be very competitive. Do check in advanced if he has the required stock though. 11. That makes sense. I guess i'm trying to find out how much of an 'overpowered' chiller I really need to be safe w/o the chiller kicking in like every other 10 min or so. Thanks for your feedback binosage! Will monitor the ambient temperature during my cycling month before i decide on my course of action. Edmund is bringing in the Hailea 250a (1/6hp) which cools up to 600L of water, flow rate of 600-2000L/hr. Maybe this will work with my canister? Hope other bros can comment too. Would like to balance between an effective chiller and less clutter outside, therefore really hoping the idea of connecting chiller to canister is still do-able.
  12. hmm you mean to say a 250L tank can't be chilled effectively by a chiller rated at <400L (Hailea) of <500L (Teco)? Just gathering opinion, coz most of the 2ft tanks here also have sump, refugium etc. which I won't have. I derived 250L as the true value of water in the tank after factoring canister, live rocks, sand etc.
  13. Finally getting my DT done up... can't wait! I m kinda in a dillema now... against better judgement, I decided to go sumpless for my 3x2x2 setup, n use canister filter instead. Decided to get an Eheim 2075 when a good deal came along. so, i'm gonna hook up tank>canister>chiller>tank. the Eheim has a pump output of 1250L/hr. so what chiller should i get tt is suitable for my tank size? i'm definitely limited by the slow flow rate of the canister. I'm assuming that after taking into account sand, live rocks etc, should end up with around 250L water in the tank, is this assumption correct? Hoping the Hailea will be enough... Or any other suggestions?
  14. I think 3200 gallons per hour is WAY overkill for a 20 gallon (160x turnover!!!) prob create a tsunami in your tank I'm newbie too, but i think typically depending on the type of corals you intend to keep, you will prob wanna turn over your tank volume anywhere between 10-20x. Most SPS reefers here might even push it to 30-40x (i think) Also have to take into account your scaping. I would prob get a nano wavemaker first, and add another one if I decide I need more flow. Or buy one of those Tunze nano wavebox or Vortech MP20 if budget allows. Do check out the MP10, it just started shipping last week and should be hitting LFS within the next couple of months.
  15. Think someone reserved V(tec)'s tank, and tt's one of the better ones The more I research, the more I like the idea of using canister. Can you imagine the ease of water changes? Just plug out the canister n change the water in the canister while washing/replacing the filter wool. wootz! no more hassle! Of course the downside is abit more clutter at the side, but I think that isn't really a problem. The main drawback is the inability to hook anything else up (like CR or UV) because the canister pump is only 1250L/hr. I think I can live w/o tt? cross fingers. planning to keep LPS n soft corals only... The other thing is no surface skimming if using canister. Think just aim the return or a wavemaker to create surface agitation should be good enough right? hmmm so many questions, n me impatient waiting for answers... heh thank goodness for the internet, makes researching sooo much easier!
  16. Bro Pmed you regarding your live rocks. thanks!
  17. Maybe PM me his contact bro Solo? just called Yonghua this morning, maybe will just do up a nice simple tank if there's no good deal since there doesn't seem to be a very big gap in diff in price... any bro here wanna decomm their 3ft can PM me before i make the plunge some time next week!
  18. to update on my qt tank, the ph has dropped to 8.6, still too high think i will get Prime this weekend and dose it in tap water, and aged water of 1 day to see if it makes a difference. gonna try to experiment mixing with distilled water too, will update on the results. Ammonia seems to be hovering around 0.25mg/L. Qn: will i still see the ammonia spike if i dose bacteria pills? its either that or i remember reading from somewhere that my ph is too high for ammonia to be detected. The water also turning quite chalky... hope its normal? sigh, nobody seems to be selling a decent 3ft in pasar malam. am toying ard with the idea of sumpless tank with an external filter like eheim 2075 hooked up to chiller + my deltec mce600 hang onto the side of the tank. the idea is using mainly LR and some biohome in canister for bio filtration, mechanical filtration and PUR II in canister, and Sorb 4 in the chamber of my deltec. how does that sound? The eheim 2075 is rated for up to 600L aquariums, and has a pump output of 1250L/hr, so I think there shouldn't be much trouble teeing it to a hailea 150? (recommended flowrate of 250-1200L) anyone with experience in sumpless tank wanna help me list the advantages and disadvantages of where I seem to be headed?
  19. Nope no live rocks in QT, just v. basic setup. I'm basically gonna try to follow the quarantine processes that can be found in these 2 links: http://www.reefsanctuary.com/forums/fish-d...-step-step.html http://www.reefkeeping.com/issues/2004-10/...ature/index.php Sounds v. stringent, but i think it should work if done correctly. PATIENCE is the key! For noobies, i think Lee in the forum has written pretty good articles for cycling, acclimatization, freshwater bath. They can all be found here: http://www.reefsanctuary.com/forums/fish-d...ine-system.html Although the article talks about keeping a fowlr, I think its also still relevant to the reef tank. Based on these articles and my other research online, I have compiled a list of 'to do' items in excel to tick off, so that i won't get new tank syndrome and jump the gun Maybe seniors here can comment on these articles too to help us newbies? If everything goes well, considering to refine and post my 'spreadsheet' to help others interested in setting up their own tank in future!
