  1. I also keep mostly richodia, yuma, big bubble yuma and likes cos they can tahan my "torture" :P

also trying star polyp and zoa, small frag.

many may wonder why star polyp cos is easy .. yes... because I used to neglect the parameters so end up in bad shape.

  2. after spending many years in this hobby .... I was still  a C+/B- student :chair:

why I use "was" .. cos I thought I finally know what are my mistakes.

For the past few years I think my nano tank was in a bad shape and only mushrooms can tahan my "torture" :D

So I gather I should just keep mushrooms else seeing the coral rot away also torturing to me.

yes, thanks to the improvement in technology, some expensive equipment are now more affordable, e.g. lighting.

    TBC ....

  3. Was using AL-60 Thermoelectric cooling chiller for 2--3 years for my 40-50L nano tank and lately found out it has problem bringing the temperature below 27.5 degree.

Realized one of the fans stopped spinning.

Since this chiller was doing fine before one fan spoil, so I decided to get another one. Will also replace the fan of the old chiller and use it as a standby.

Perhaps I  wasn't aware all along that this type of chiller will struggle during prolong hot weather,  the problem I faced with the new AL-60.

The new AL-60 failed to bring down the tank water temperature but instead the water temperature went all the way up to room temperature.

I tested it with 5L and 25L of tap water and it was working normally. But once I hook it up to the tank, it was unable to cool the tank water at all, unless the weather was cooling with room temperature below 28 degree. During those days of troubleshooting, I have to on the room aircon to help out this new chiller :cry2:

So I concluded that this chiller is not suitable for me :chair:. Unless the water volume is halved so that it has enough juice to do its due diligence during a hot day. "Wasted $200" end up in storeroom.

But not sure why the old one was able to do a better job.

After researching for a while, seems like  after AL-60, the next smaller budget chiller would be Hailea chillers.

Haelia 100A was my first chiller and its noise is horrible. So I decide to choose either HK-150A or 28A.

Finally I decided to go for HK-150A cos 28A seems like a very old model. Have been using the Hk-150A for almost a month now.

Noise wise I think its ok. Its definitely no whisper quiet but is also not very noisy. Its probably sort of slightly louder than your room fan running at full blast

Easy setup. Set it at 26 degree.

So far has been working fine like clockwork. Kick in every 45-60mins and run for about 7-8mins.

    Hope it can last.

  4. while trying to get ideas on what else can help with the GHA, recalled I used to have the electric blue leg hermit crab

quickly make a trip to LFS to pick up 2 hermit crab and 1 electric blue.

first night no action. Seems like started working on the second day :yeah: . Noticed some reduction of GHA on one of the liverocks.

Will give them a week to see how things go before I consider Flux RX.

  5. tux urchin can also be "temperamental" ... not sure when it starts to be interested in the green algae again ...sigh :cry2:

about 2 months ago almost wanted to give up my 1 ft nano tank as the alage has invaded all LR and sandbed ... maybe I got lazy and did not housekeep as often.

before tearing the tank down I decided to clean up everything to give it a last chance. Sekali I noticed the urchin started to clear up the algae.

So I got motivated and started to clean the tank more often and suck up the green stuff on the sand bed. Planning to remove all the sand if it didn't help.

But lately the algae on the LR started to grow longer again... and the urchin is not eating. Strangely there is a small portion of the LR where the green algae got very thick become dark green color and the urchin clear it up :erm:

Bought a zebra urchin (I think so) but doesn't help.

My tank is special ... :D  ... no fish, just some mushroom and skin polyp and 3 urchins. As budget and self sustain as possible. As long as it looks clean and tidy and the animals proven to be able to survive.

No feeding. Only carbon and Phosguard in the sump. Use distill water from supermarket.

wonder if my blue light is too cheapo ... actually is in the process to "upgrade" to LED bulb from China :D

Hi hi! It's my first tank, and if i had a 2nd chance, I would get a bigger tank..haha. I think depends on how well the tank is made for the lifespan of the glue.

Yeah AL60 is great but mine is a little wonky now. used to maintain the temperature, now it fluctuates between 2-3degress.

Why you want to downsize  your tank may I ask?

    fluctuates between 2-3degress? as in?

AL60 seems no problem in cooling my 50+ litre tank. Those fans inside look like PC fans! .. ha, can replace myself.

Wonder what technology this chiller is using? not just fan and heat sink/fins ba?

wanted to downsize cos easier to maintain perhaps ... try not to get too tire maintaining the tank

    also lower maintenance cost :D

actually even thought of stopping but seems like downsize should address my concern and get to keep my coral

  7. Thought of getting this nuvo nano 10. Do you guys find the price steep at $175 (tank only, F&M)?

My old tank already used for 5 years. How often should we change tank in case the glue give way?

Just bought the AOL AL60... seems ok. Noise level is much lower than HC-100a but still the fan sound is not whisper quiet

Need it to struggle with my 50L tank for a while till I get the 30L tank
