  1. hi, ever considered the Olympus C4000. underwater casing at $300+ too. can take really good close-ups.
  2. i bought my no. 1 sand from OP last month. sloping from 7" to 3" (left to right) picked up some conflicting theories. Ron Shimek said 4" enuf. but talking abt 0.113mm in diameter. but since the only amt of $ i'm prepared to spend is only enough on no.1, I decided to pile it up higher.
  3. i have that same sea fan for abt 6 mths already. was pretty worried at the start when it didn't polyp that often. but now (after shifting to a spot with less light and more currents), it is usually covered with white polyps for at least 2 hrs abt 3-4 times a day. its surviving on the only liquid food i add. coralife "smorgasbord" (is that how you spell it..?)
  4. i'm using a teco too. like what tanzy said, the outer cover may produce some sudden vibration noise when the chiller turns on. power consumption is alright if you buy the right model for your tank size. remember to check out the specs of the models before buying. (never measured the exact amt though. worthwhile investment if you are keeping corals n it keeps everyone (inhibitants) happy.
  5. looks like we have all the details firmed up already. so when do you guys want to try out ? BTW, Ian, you already have a diy overflow box, you sure you still want/need a hangon refugium ?
  6. most picture/painting framing shops should be able to provide the service. clear acrylic, that is.
  7. hangon looks sturdy that way, but what is the min. thickness of the acrylic you are looking at ? prefer drawing water fr. tank by pump so that if pump fails, the overflow will not "overflow".. if use siphon effect and return water to tank by pump, may be very messy if pump is suddenly turned off. just my $0.02 worth.
  8. the last time we saw our office cleaner shrimps with eggs, it only stayed there for a few days (<3). and after that it was prob deposited somewhere and feasted by our clown and damsel.
  9. gotcha! but will have to give it a miss cos the cleaner shrimp in my tank is adopted by my wife. won't be able to explain to her if something happens...
  10. hi wolfie, will pm you if i find it in sgp. Chanbi, heard that the Rio600 used with Backpak is with attachments. would you know if its the appropriate model ? thanks
  11. hi mv3i, both the flame angel and hawk are supposed to be reef-safe, but extra caution is always preferred. some people have experienced flame hawks making tempuras out of their prized shrimps...
  12. hi, wanna find out if anyone here is using the CPR backpak. thinking of getting it from the US if the lfs here do not carry it. but may face a problem, cos the RIO600 pump is for 110V instead of our 220V ... thanks in advance!
  13. hi, thot i should post this incase some of you guys are looking for small quantities of acrylic for whatever purposes (mine was to prevent fairy wrasse from jumping out of tank !), can go to any framing shops to ask them to cut out the specific size you need. I spent 1.5 hrs walking around hardware shops today until finally stumbling upon a kind chap who asked me to go by a framing shop. (da ! should have thot of that earlier...) an earlier encounter with a LH shop wanted to charge $8 for a 2ft by 0.3ft strip!!! must be mad to pay that kind of price. and in the end, the framing shop only charged $3.
  14. hi people, just saw a whole new batch of flame hawks, flame angels and flasher wrasses at a lfs today. oooh! conditions look good and just purchased a flame angel for a friend. Q1: are these fishes only available from Hawaii? have planned to get a flame angel soon, but at a dilema now after seeing the flame hawk. always perching and looking cool..a bit like my blenny/royal gramar. (very cute) Q2:is the FH a big eater? dun want him generating too much sh** as i still have not solved my nitrate problem. Q3) is it true that aquarists can stock more fishes if they belong to those that dun swim too much, i.e.take up les swimming space and eat less thereby less sh** produced. (but my bi-color blenny ate so much and produced such big lumps of sh** that i wish i could toilet-train him! ) p.s. for those stocking up their tank, new stock includes Achi Tangs and lots of yellow tangs too.
  15. cool, guys. was also thinking of how to do it after looking at ecosys's design, but gave up after rationalising that it would be impossible to mount it considering the weight of the refugium. would be keeping tabs on this thread to pick up a couple of tricks !
  16. hi, i believe canister filters are fine for nitrification. (cultivating bacteria to remove ammonia and nitrites.) works for me. I have been using a 2022 canister for the last 6 months, but found it tiring to do water changes weekly to export nitrates, so revamped system to include intank DSB. hope it works for me soon. if you have a fish only tank, canister filters might be ok for a start, until you find it too tiring to water changes, can find other alternatives..
  17. hi Sinn, my office tank averages 23C in the day and after 7 pm the temp creeps to abt 27C until the next morning. so far the frogspan coral, cleaner shrimp, tomato clown and damsel are all doing fine. been that way for the last 8 months. so far no signs of stress, both eating agressively and in all, everyone's been doing fine. (home tank on chiller at 27C though.)
  18. saw them this morning too, looking good. recommended fellow reefer to go there too, will pm him to check if he bought and maybe can post some pics.
  19. hi CKS, cannot remember exact, but was pale orange on my Sera scale. enough to scare me hey Tanzy, that sounds possible, cos this is not the first time i tested tapwater, and I never got such a high reading before. pls help me to recall, does RO/DI remove nitrates ?
  20. hi, spoke to fellow reefer today abt increasing nitrate in pure reef tank (ok, + 1 cleaner shrimp) and went home to test my overnight tap water(premixed with coralife salt) and found traces of nitrate. 1. is it common to detect nitrate in hdb tapwater ? 2. or is it due to certain areas we live in, i.e. pipes old, storage tank in hdb old etc. ps. i live in the west and flat is >20 years old. currently don't use any RO or DI kits. thanks.
  21. too late, all sold. thanks anyway Phang.
  22. ooh, AT, what a gorgeous specimen you have there. i've been reading up on them for the last few nights (until wife complain) and I'm definitely prepared to adopt one soon. but i'm not lucky enough to be able to keep more than 1... also noticed that your flasher wrasse is smaller than your anthia phang, thanks for the info, I've dedicated 6 hrs to visit 4 shops tomorrow, will definitely include reborn.
  23. mine was even trained to take dried pellets, have fun watching him skip from rocks to rocks !
  24. hi guys, been checking out the www for pics of fairy wrasses and current favourite is the carpenter's flasher wrasse. has anyone seen it on sale in sg's LFS ? also because i suspect its body shape is similar to the royal gramar, (another of my fav) I'm worried that they may fight ? any experiences? thanks
  25. hi AT, how does the instant algae you tried compare with the frozen red/green algae and lobster eggs sold at a LFS here ? thinking of giving my corals a treat ! currently feeding the coralilfe smorgasbord, and my red gorgonian and star polyps responding well
