  1. Surprisingly, my green mandarin have been with me for 8 months now (see avatar)... and I even have a sixline wrasse.

Lucky for me the pods supply had been constant (i don't know how) as I hardly see my mandarin feed on any kind of fish food that I'd given them...

An interesting observation for mine is that it kind of like the sera plankton pill...

  2. i was wondering if we can add more macroalgae in the main tank (assuming no sump or dsb) and let the macroalgae feed on the nitrates, then trim them for nitrate export... just like the refugium way... will it work?

  3. Hi Crab,

Actually, even for the first picture I posted the scopas was already on its way to recovery. Before that it was much worse... I couldn't post as my hard disk crashed on me then. What you saw was the left over images I'd backup'ed.

I don't really know exactly what I did that helped in the recovery. But below are the areas I worked hard on:

    1. Water quality. Needless to say. Constant 30% water changes fortnightly.

    2. Food variety. Not only pellets, I give them flakes, cyclops, shrimps and food mix enriched with vitamins and garlic..... anything i can think of.

    3. Reduce stress.

Above all, don't give up. There was a period of time I really wanted to return them to the sea... I took it as a challenge and worked on healing the scopas. It results are really satisfying after all that hard work.

Unfortunately, my Koran has the same problem like yours... I'm still taking pictures monthly to monitor for signs of recovery.

Will post more on my Koran when it started to heal.

  4. reason why more star trek gadgets end up as reality is becos star trek gets its stories from lots of freelance writers who submit them for the episodes.  hence u get half the world geeks writing these stories and these are the very people who are exploring the gadgets for real world use.  they juz put their dreams into the story and voila, star trek has them.  so it is the gadgets showing their potential in star trek instead of real world getting ideas from star trek.

True. And perhaps this explains why star trek is losing the popularity war... right?

  5. I'm a star wars fan too. The x-wings, the dog-fights, death star etc. Damn obsessed with the light saber when I was young.

But actually if you sit back and think about it, it is always Star Trek gadgets that came into reality after decades.

In the past, talking to computers were thought to be impossible. Star trek has this fantastic simulation room that receives instruction via voice. Look at what we have now, speech recognition systems (albiet immature).

What about their communication devices (Captain Kirk era)? Look at the size of our cellphones now.

Of course, many can argue that ideas of Star wars of the past had also fuelled the development of many present-day technologies. However, IMO, quite a number of (techno or bio) research had actually stemmed from sci-fi movies, particularly star trek.

    :peace:

  6. wow thanks terryansimon, ryz and Clownfish for your recommendations...

indeed I was looking at the Creative 5GB one (Zen?) and possibly, iPod mini (which looks damn small, light and cool).

Zen really scores, esp. with the built in tuner....

imo, when memory had crossed the gigabyte boundary, thats good enough liao... I don't even think i can finish the whole collection of file in a single charge of battery... heh heh...

how about the sound qualities? any users out there to comment?

  7. I used to have such problems too..

Raising the water level of your water till the return ramp is partially submerged won't help. You'll still get the micro bubbles.

Besides using wool to cover up the return pipe, what you can do is to route the output of the return pipe further away from the return pump, so by the time the bubbles reaches the return pump its already gone (thats what i did).

Otherwise "surround" the water by compartmentialising using filter wool in your sump... it helps when done correctly.

If still got, kiasu do all three... sure can minimise one...

I guess not much problems with bubbles on main tank, except if you keep corals like sponge. They will most probably rot and die if you never get rid of the bubbles that was trapped in it.

    Just my 3 cents.

  8. Hi Seawater,

I was toying the same idea too...

Conceptually the way FR and canister work should be the same right? water flow thru the media at a constant rate to maximise effectiveness of the media...

I'm curious to know the drawbacks too. My take: I think can...

  9. Try looking hard under the rocks. The last time mine went missing after i rescaped, it buried itself under the rocks....

... then i notice a stench from the water....

damn getting the rot out of the LR is gruelling...
