  1. Hi, I am not drilling the hole this time but I have done it on a 6mm glass tank. You need to buy a diamond tipped hole saw of the correct diameter for your bulkhead. The trick is to start drilling with a slow speed and once the hole is started, you can gradually increase the drill speed. I use soapy water as a lubricant during drilling and I am sure they sell a specific product for the purpose of lubrication. One more point, if your hole saw is about to come out from the other side of the glass, ease off the downward pressure as too much presure will cause the glass on the other side to chip and it will not be a clean cut. Regards,
  2. Hi All, I attached the drawing for my new tank. My return pump is rated at 2280 l/h. I plan to make a single durso to reduce noise. What should be the diameter of the pipe in order to hadle the flow of my pump at 2280 l/h. I need to know the size of the pipe in order to drill the hole inside the overflow. also any comments on the design of the tank is most welcomed Thanks.
  3. Hi All, I need to get a piece of plywood as a base for my tank. Dimension is 35 7/8" by 18". Thickness is 12 or 15 mm Anyone got lobang? Thanks, Blackpuma
  4. Hello, As above. I am going to put 40Kg of sand and about 40 kg of LR in the tank. Can the tank take all the weight ? Thanks
  5. Hi Ppl, I am going to buy some LR soon. Went to many LFS and found many type of live rock. Got rock full of macro algae. got rock full of pinkish coralline algae and also got dead rock in the process of being revived together with other LR being sold as "Live Rock". Prices range from $5 to $10 per kilo and sizes varies from palm size to big ones. Also got branches at 18 per kilo which I definately cannot afford, claimed to be from tonga. I am setting up a FOWLR and would appreciate if anyone could tell me what is the best type to buy. I also read from some book that the more porous the rock is the better it filters the water. Also where is the best place for good and reasonably sized LR. I don't mind paying slightly more for good quality rocks. The $5 rock is very smallish and comes with a lot of macro algae. Thx.
  6. Hi Forum, I am going to fill my tank with sand and water this weekend. Mine is a FOWLR with a few fishes and maybe some softies using LR and protien skimming for filtration. Should I invest in a RO/DI unit or just plain dechlorinated tap water to mix my salt ?. I stay in the south of Singapore Thanks.
  7. I went to the same LFS, holding facilities for the fishes were excellent. I am sure I will get some LS there when my tank is ready and cycled.
  8. Hi Domino, Me too an avid diy'er here. I wish I had the time to build everything and anything instead of getting it off the shelf. And I can see that you are someone that is proud of your own work or else you won't use a mitre box. People that do not care will just anyhow say and hamtam all the parts together.
  9. Wah Chipson, You produce skimmer for a living ah. The workmanship is perfect. Do you have a lathe at home ?
  10. Hi All, Like most reefers here, I am all for clean caught fishes. I do not mind paying a premium for garunteed clean caugth fishes. Take the regal angel for example, a species know notoriously for feeding problems in captivity. I beleive it all boils down to the collecting methods. I have kept one for 5 years in the past, surfacing happily everyday to makan flake food. Why is it eating? perhaps I was one of the lucky one that bought a "almost clean" specimen. With forums like this and many other online resources, keeping marine fishes in no more an art and I beleive it has evolved into a more sciencetific level. Gone were the days when one has to scratch his head and ponder about fish death and nuisance algae. Regards, Blackpuma
  11. I have to agree to a certain extent that the pricing of the fish will be ONE of the many indictaion if it's clean or cynide caught. OTOH, the variation in prices of the same species could also mean that different LFS has different profit margins. Also they have to recover costs for DOA fish. In short there is really no sure fire way to tell if the fish is clean or cynide caught by pricing alone. Priing is just ONE of the indication among many others. There is a certain shop that I visit which sells fishes at rock bottom prices from Indonesia and I could not see any of the cynide caught behavior described here. I think the question here is how MUCH cynide they are exposed to. If the fish receives enough just to stun them, they will recover and do well in the tank. Fishes that are overdosed with cynide will eventually perish. My 2c worth

  13. Eric, Nice work, give me more info on how to build this skimmer leh
  14. Hi Bros, When I first started to keep marines several years back, Almost all of the fishes from the Phillipines and Indonesia were cynide caught. Fishes from the Red Sea and Americas were mostly hand caught, that's what the LFS store claims. I beleive the situation now is much better although I suspect cynide caught fishes are still rampant in the trade. Several LFS store I visited recently told me thier LS is clean caught. IMHO, it is very difficult to diffrentiate between clean caught and cynide caugth fishes, It is up to the LFS to tell you how thier fishes are caught, or worst still some LFS don't even know. Since I am coming back to this hobby it would be interesting to bring this subject out as it always saddens me to see LS die in tanks with perfect water quality. It is also an ethical issue and we should not support these eco damaging collecting methods. Will any bros here care to share their experiences on this issue ? Regards, blackpuma
  15. You are such a craftsman ! Are you in the technical line by profession?
  16. Hi domino, Nice work, where did you get the mitre box ? Saw it in a DIY shop tdy but selling for 40 + $, way out of my budget.
  17. Tks all for the very warm wellcome. OK, I am almost sold on the H&S Skimmer Where can I get one in Singapore. Can I use any pumps or has it got to be a special pump from H&S Tks
  18. Thanks all beri beri much for the answers. Maybe I can start up with a little life rock 1st and begin to add in more gradually. Me have patience here and do not mind to wait 2 months or more for the tank to mature. The sight of water circulating in the tank with some live rocks already make me beri shiok already. At all cost I do not want to create a stinky mess because of insufficient skimming and waste all my LR and my money down the lonkang. Can anyone pls tell me where to get cheap price for we#@o skimmers. Thanks for all the support.
  19. Hi Forum, I am coming back to this facinating hobby after a long lay off and have some very old skimmers, like the Sanders WT 350 and the Azoo super tri skimmer. I am intending to set up a 3 X 2 X 1.5 fowlr with live rock and intend to use the sanders wt 350 as the sole means of water purification, if that is not sufficeint, I will throw in the Azoo as well. My system also have a sump measuring 3 X 2 X 1 and all the skimmers will reside in the sump. Eventually when the tank matures, it will be stocked with at most 4 to 5 small fishes and some soft corals. Any comments as to weather the skimming is sufficient, or do I really need a high tech present day skimmer to do the job? I stay in the south and is the tap water there good enuf for such a tank or do I have to invest in a RO/DI unit for my salt mix ? Thanks for reading this longish post. Regards, Blackpuma

  22. Hi Melvin, Thanks for your speedy response, will modify the design. you
  23. Hi all, I followed the instructions given by this thread and diy'ed the overflow. Flow rate is fantastic but I am left wih one problem, the siphon will not re-start when power resumes after a power failure to the return pump in the sump The test is done with both the cap on and off. Could it be the difference in heght between the input and output of the overflow is too much. Also, I copied the design and I hope no one is offended. Any help with the siphon re-start problem is much appreciated Thanks
  24. Hi Peter, Thanks for your offer . Managed to drill the holes uding a hole saw. Thanks anyway.
