  1. since u get it cut at dama, why dont u get them glue for u?? :D solve all ur problems. no need to buy any glue....

DIY Shoik mah, the guy at DAMA do not want to do it because he is afraid it might leak. Anyway, I wantz to try DIY, so hope can build skimmer next time.

  2. I simply siliconed the industrial trunking above the overflow box.

Still have one piece of trunking 20" long. If it's suitable for you, come and collect from me at Hougang.

Thanks for your generous offer, I pm you if I need the trunking.

    :thanks::thanks::thanks::thanks:

  3. Hi All,

Got my acrylic sawed to size at DAMA today.

Any brothers here got advice how to make water tight joints ? I read alot about capillary cementing on the web but is there any points I should look for to ensure the joint is water tight.

    thanks

PS this is the first time I am working with acrylic :yeah:

  4. Hi All,

I want to cut some teeth on my home made overflow box. I intend to use a templete, see attached image.

Basically, the bottom part of the teeth will be drilled but what is the best way to remove the material in between the slot.

    Any help appreciated.

    Thanks,

  5. Hi Bros,

I currently have a 36(W)16(L)x16(H) and is planning to upgrade to a 36(W)x18(L)x22(H).

The 36x16x16 with water is calculated to be 155kg wheras the 36x18x22 is 240 kg, both figures without rocks and sand included. I estimated that it will be about 50% more heavier including sand and LR.

Can my existing stainless steel take the weight? This stand was given to me by a friend and it is stainless steel, ideal for the corrosive nature of SW. I have included a picture shown with the sump at the bottom of the tank. The square sections of the stand is 30mm. The sump will be half filled during normal operation and not what you see in the picture, filled almost to the brim.

    Any help appreciated.

    :thanks::thanks:

  6. By the way, are you doing the drilling yourself? Care to share how to do it?

    Hi,

I am not drilling the hole this time but I have done it on a 6mm glass tank. You need to buy a diamond tipped hole saw of the correct diameter for your bulkhead.

The trick is to start drilling with a slow speed and once the hole is started, you can gradually increase the drill speed. I use soapy water as a lubricant during drilling and I am sure they sell a specific product for the purpose of lubrication.

One more point, if your hole saw is about to come out from the other side of the glass, ease off the downward pressure as too much presure will cause the glass on the other side to chip and it will not be a clean cut.

  7. Hi All,

I attached the drawing for my new tank.

My return pump is rated at 2280 l/h. I plan to make a single durso to reduce noise.

What should be the diameter of the pipe in order to hadle the flow of my pump at 2280 l/h.

I need to know the size of the pipe in order to drill the hole inside the overflow. also any comments on the design of the tank is most welcomed

    Thanks.

  8. Hi Ppl,

I am going to buy some LR soon. Went to many LFS and found many type of live rock.

Got rock full of macro algae. got rock full of pinkish coralline algae and also got dead rock in the process of being revived together with other LR being sold as "Live Rock".

Prices range from $5 to $10 per kilo and sizes varies from palm size to big ones.

Also got branches at 18 per kilo which I definately cannot afford, claimed to be from tonga.

I am setting up a FOWLR and would appreciate if anyone could tell me what is the best type to buy. I also read from some book that the more porous the rock is the better it filters the water.

Also where is the best place for good and reasonably sized LR. I don't mind paying slightly more for good quality rocks. The $5 rock is very smallish and comes with a lot of macro algae.

    Thx. :eyeblur:

  9. Hi Domino,

Me too an avid diy'er here. I wish I had the time to build everything and anything instead of getting it off the shelf.

And I can see that you are someone that is proud of your own work or else you won't use a mitre box. People that do not care will just anyhow say and hamtam all the parts together.

  10. Hi All,

Like most reefers here, I am all for clean caught fishes. I do not mind paying a premium for garunteed clean caugth fishes.

Take the regal angel for example, a species know notoriously for feeding problems in captivity. I beleive it all boils down to the collecting methods. I have kept one for 5 years in the past, surfacing happily everyday to makan flake food. Why is it eating? perhaps I was one of the lucky one that bought a "almost clean" specimen.

With forums like this and many other online resources, keeping marine fishes in no more an art and I beleive it has evolved into a more sciencetific level. Gone were the days when one has to scratch his head and ponder about fish death and nuisance algae.

  11. I have to agree to a certain extent that the pricing of the fish will be ONE of the many indictaion if it's clean or cynide caught.

OTOH, the variation in prices of the same species could also mean that different LFS has different profit margins. Also they have to recover costs for DOA fish.

In short there is really no sure fire way to tell if the fish is clean or cynide caught by pricing alone. Priing is just ONE of the indication among many others.

There is a certain shop that I visit which sells fishes at rock bottom prices from Indonesia and I could not see any of the cynide caught behavior described here.

I think the question here is how MUCH cynide they are exposed to. If the fish receives enough just to stun them, they will recover and do well in the tank. Fishes that are overdosed with cynide will eventually perish.

  12. You might wan to DIY ur own "H&S" skimmer, Very cheap & quite effective for my 3ft tank IMO.........

    Tupperwares - $10 from carrefour

Atman pumps mod with bioball impeller - $18 + 1 bioball

    Resun 700L/hr inlet pump - $15

PVC pipes, joints and Unions - $12

    Total $55.........

    Eric

    Eric,

Nice work, give me more info on how to build this skimmer leh :P

  13. Hi Bros,

When I first started to keep marines several years back, Almost all of the fishes from the Phillipines and Indonesia were cynide caught.

Fishes from the Red Sea and Americas were mostly hand caught, that's what the LFS store claims.

I beleive the situation now is much better although I suspect cynide caught fishes are still rampant in the trade.

Several LFS store I visited recently told me thier LS is clean caught.

IMHO, it is very difficult to diffrentiate between clean caught and cynide caugth fishes, It is up to the LFS to tell you how thier fishes are caught, or worst still some LFS don't even know.

Since I am coming back to this hobby it would be interesting to bring this subject out as it always saddens me to see LS die in tanks with perfect water quality. It is also an ethical issue and we should not support these eco damaging collecting methods.

Will any bros here care to share their experiences on this issue ?

  14. Thanks all beri beri much for the answers. Maybe I can start up with a little life rock 1st and begin to add in more gradually.

Me have patience here and do not mind to wait 2 months or more for the tank to mature. The sight of water circulating in the tank with some live rocks already make me beri shiok already.

At all cost I do not want to create a stinky mess because of insufficient skimming and waste all my LR and my money down the lonkang.

Can anyone pls tell me where to get cheap price for we#@o skimmers.

    Thanks for all the support.
