  2. is this your first few fishes after cycling? Not recommended to add a tang so early after cycling. They are prone to ich/velvet. Probably u can check for ammonia/nitrite first? can also check if u see and white spots. Try not to stress it further by driving it out of hiding spot, Most fish tend to go into hiding mode when first introduced. Will take time. U can try some frozen mysis to entice it. Hope it helps and gd luck bro.

  3. Today Zhng my chiller day.

Hailea internal temp probe seems not very accurate resulting in often switch on and higher electric bill.

Bought from our favourite shop TB the external probe
    IMG_8719.JPG

Open the front cover, Look for the internal probe connector, disconnect original one and connect to ur new external probe
    IMG_8720.JPG

Remember to secure the probe, best is to buy those screw on for specifically for hanging probes. I haven buy yet so use tape as band aid first. This is important as probe is the heart of chiller system, this one comes loose, will be GG.
    IMG_8724.JPG

The front cover hole can fit the probe dimension so can go thru it for neater look, without the need to drill additional holes thru the chiller chassis.
    IMG_8721.JPG

Disclaimer: Just for sharing and if u follow me and screw up ur chiller dont come after me k! Experiment at ur own risk.

Thanks for reading and happy reefing.

  4. Thanks for the reply and encouragement. It really lightens my mood. I was thinking the same thing too, if lfs does refund/exchange for everyone, someone bound to abuse it. Though I sort of think that it's common but was probably upset becos of no response and there after a photo. It could mean something or not. I don't know.
I understand that this hobby, there won't be a guarantee thing. There are many underlying factors, sometimes one just gone for no reasons and others nothing happen at all. It's like in a batch of apples, there's always a bad apple. It may also my fault that I have done something wrong in the process due to inexperience.
And you're so right about inspecting and qcs. This is something to learn for me. I should be more particular on checking before purchasing, just like buying anything :snore:. I just feel paiseh to stare at the corals in front shop owner. Need to be more thick skin. Probably a lesson for people like me, remember to inspect the corals before purchasing. I doubt anyone will be so dumb. Thanks for the comment.

Bro, no need to feel paiseh, inspect to the last drop lol, same concept as u buy house all these u will keep checking mah lol..Just to share my experience, try to go early and not till shop closing, got 1 time i went near closing time and felt paiseh and impulse buy a torch which don’t normally pass my own QC standards lol, oh well it is what it is..move on.. Also for fish i *always* insist LFS to feed the fish to confirm feeding b4 buying besides checking for skinny tummy or external parasites. If the shop bo chap u, just walk away.. remember u r paying customer, customer is 99% right lol...

  5. Hi Guys,
I have a question regards to buying corals. Just recently, I bought one torch coral from one lfs. I put in my new tank to try. The tank has surving sps, digita for a few weeks. No ammonia, detectable nitrate though alk is abit low 6.8 - 7. I put in on sand with a little flow for it to aclimate. But during the night, I notice there is a little receding on the side. I thought maybe, it was injured a little on the way home. The next morning, I notice is not doing well and quickly move to my another established tank. Usually, for my case new lps will opens up in a few hours. But the receding never stop, just 3 days is almost gone.
When I collected the coral, I didn't really have the chance to see the coral condition as I purchase online. The lfs just go in take and pack. I didn't really check when I reach home either, I am not expert so I can't tell either. I just temp alcim, dip and put in. I only notice when it's in tank. It is probably my fault for not checking before collecting. I trusted the lfs that they won't sell me a coral that is in bad condition.
I contacted the lfs on day 3, but the lfs didn't even bother reply. I didn't ask for refund or anything, perhaps hoping he can give me some advice. But nonethless, nothing. All I saw was the lfs post an tank showing all his beautiful torches. I not gonna lie, I felt really upset and uncomfortable, which make my whole purchasing experience really awful. It may be my fault to put it in a newer tank. But still..
What do you guys do when you encounter new corals dying? Do lfs in Singapore provide refund/replacement if there's any issue with the new corals? As I'm still quite new. I believe most of lfs don't. I encounter one lfs does but must within a time frame. What do you guys think? Thanks.

Sorry for ur loss bro, its common in this hobby. Not likely will refund cos the LFS can just say its ur water issue. Its hard to pinpoint and not fair to LFS also. Sometimes it can be our fault, rough handling, water issue etc...thats y online purchase is cheaper but comes with risk, the color can be off or the coral is sick or receding, sometimes the LFS cant tell also as they have many lifestock to look after..so sometimes go shop buy better, take time to see see look look, inspect pest, apitasia, receding tissue etc, den buy with confidence, sure u are paying premium, but at least it pass ur own QC and wysiwyg.
Dont be dishearten and keep going, u will soon find ur favorite LFS which provide healthy corals. Sometimes it can be the water,
flow light also, maybe LFS tank parameters quite different from urs and coral will shock, the acclimation probably wont help as corals are slow adapting animals, this is just my theory though.

  6. Day 9 post hatch update

Fries have gotten bigger, total of 9 fries survive till date, initially tot lost one but it managed to survive all the big fishes predation. Interesting thing is that it swam to join the others like its instinct, Mine is 4 foot tank and 1 fry is like 0.5cm. Not sure how it find its way, Amazing!

    IMG_8638.JPG
    Fries have gotten abit bigger

    Hatching BBs using hobby kit

    IMG_8637.JPG
Just put the eggs at the outer rim, once hatch bbs will swim towards center where there is light. Harvest and tats it! no egg shells to clear.

    IMG_8639.JPG
enriching the bbs with reef roids

Day 1 post hatch, bbs is at instar 1 stage with no mouths so cant eat, 1 hr prior feeding, i enrich bbs with selcon, hope sticks to the bbs body and the banggai fries eat will benefit from enrich selcon

Day 2 post hatch, bbs is instar stage 2 with mouth developed, this stage i enrich with reef roids, powdery enough for the bbs to eat? Hope so haha...reef roids is mainly planktons so quite nutritious with the HUFA (fatty acids all theses). Baby fries often suffer from sudden fright syndrome where it will get spooked and twitch to bottom and die, read that related to lack of HUFA all these..hopefully can prevent that.

  7. It appears my ammonia has fallen to zero, but I am worried that the bacteria died during the 6-7 hours that the pumps were not working.  Am I ready for fish?
Ok so here is the creepy part.  I can’t identify why the switches went off, but my wife who has heightened senses says there is a little girl spirit in my home.  She is usually seen at my fresh water tank.  But in recent days she is also spotted peeking into the marine tank.  Because there is no other reason, we suspect it was her who played with the switches.  She means no harm but I did say loudly that what she did would disrupt the cycling of the tank.  Hope she doesn’t do it again.  I believe she also is looking forward to the tank being stocked...  what do you think?  End creepy part....

With livestock inside u need to make sure she dont do it again . Creepy...

  8. Water change day

Have catch the fries into a separate isolation box, total of 9 fries hatched, loss one due to predation, RIP buddy. Currently 8, not sure how many will make it, feeding on BBS, need slowly wean to TDO for more nutrition, or i can feed TDO to BBS den BBS to Fries.
    IMG_8522.JPG

My anthias crouching tiger hidden dragon, ready to pounce sia.
    IMG_8539.JPG

TDO = Top Dressed Otahime, very good food, read that alot industrial breeders used this. Seems quite true to me as my Mandarin dragonet eat this stuff.

BBS= Baby brine shrimp, not very nutritious i heard, but fries need movement to stimulate feeding response.

Previously used DIY hatchery but super ma fan...Bite the bullet and buy the hobby kit. it works and quite convenient i would say.
    IMG_8547.JPG

Ok finally cleaned the tank glass and tank has stabilized for now. Last few weeks hand itchy keep dosing AB+ until nutrient explode..loss a few acros...suddenly brown out and RTN.

  9. Congratulations on the newborns!  Is there a way to sex the cardinals?

    Thank you.

Pairing the cardinals require a lot of luck lol. But there are subtle differences between Male and Female. I spend quite some time at the LFS looking at it

    1. Males tend to have squarish jaw
    2. Males have 2 vents under the belly

    IMG_8542.JPG

    IMG_8543.JPG

Its probably best to get bigger size banggai cardinal so it will be easier to see their belly for male or female.

I think for higher success is to get bigger males vs females as Males doing all the heavy lifting for the brood, 20 days no eating and holding about 8-10 small fry in the mouth.

Also if u have those giant zoas like mine, once hatch the fry will hide in these zoas, its like replicate long spine sea urchin in the wild, very interesting.
    IMG_8544.JPG

It will then be very easy to remove the fry to a breeder box.

  10. Time for Otaku update

Previously my male banggai cardinal stop eating and i suspect brooding kids in mouth, sure enough after 20 days he go into labour on labour day

Can see the baby fish eyes in the mouth

Zoom in, sorry for crap photos, my skills bad

    IMG_8500.JPG
cute baby banggai fry, Good father, the mother just throw the job to dad and he completed without fuss, 20 days straight no food..sakhi...its not always about the good mums, good dads are around too

Realized banggai cardinal is endangered species only available in indonesia, hope can help propagate this species.

Thanks for reading and happy reefing!

  11. Recently saw quite a number of reefers asking about RODI system so i tot about sharing my setup hoping will benefit new reefers

RODI basically stands for Reverse Osmosis and Deionised water, sounds chim but in a nutshell, it use pressure to push water through a membrane(filter) and clean water comes out and waste water with the dirty stuff is discharged. Its like the PUB “new water” hehe.

Basically there are two types, one comes with booster pump and without, those without booster pump u need high water pressure otherwise ur waste water will gao gao..i using without booster pump as booster pump requires electricity and i tink toilet+electrical stuff is another safety hazard. With booster pump of cos the advantage is better filtered water to waste water ratio. my current without pump is about 1 clean water : 2 waste water. waste water is never wasted lah, clean toilet loh flush toilet loh.

    IMG_8400.JPG
my setup, inlet is connected to bidet(super strong water pressure). its connected via a three way valve so u can still use ur bidet no problemo.

    IMG_8405.JPG
my purchase from our dearest shop TB. works out to be about $90 sgd, include transport becomes $100 plus minus, if u buy other stuff from TB den u can tongbang and become cheaper. Sadly this brand no longer for sale.

    IMG_8402.JPG
    IMG_8403.JPG

    IMG_8401.JPG
Woodlands water ard TDS 60 maybe nearer JB less piping travel so cleaner? hehe

    IMG_8404.JPG
After filter is 0 TDS, job done.

    IMG_8407.JPG
Stage 1 sediment filter basically takes out the bigger stuff

    IMG_8408.JPG
stage 2: Carbon; no need further explain

    IMG_8409.JPG
Stage 3: The RO membrane, this step takes out the very small dissolved stuff, normally after this step TDs is about 2-5 (i tink but no confirm haha)

    IMG_8410.JPG
Final step: DI resin, after this shld get zero TDS hurray!!

    IMG_8406.JPG
Muis brand no longer available in TB, so find this alternative, yet to use yet so cant comment on its effectiveness.

RODI is a very controversial topic, a lot old bird reefer use tap water and just dechlorine and no dai ji at all.

My thinking is engineering background so if input alot of noise how to troubleshoot issues?? So make sure input water swee swee u less one headache? Tio Bo?

Plus this hobby no matter wat is expensive, corals expensive, why risk it? Seriously get from TB is not that expensive if u look long term, my system $100 bucks can last me more than 1 year(depending on ur maint lah, i lazy person only change 1 pail (20 liter) a week nia) so its much better den going NTUC drag home tons of NTUC water? its probably cheaper than LFS saltwater also plus u get to choose ur own salt and at ur own convenience to mix the salt.

Just my 2 cents and hope can help newer reefers.

Thanks for reading till the end

  12. Here’s the re-engineered “Pods Grow + Nutrient Export” box...

    IMG_4816.JPG.5dc4b3bd8dde58b4599912ff9a949c3b.JPG
    IMG_4824.JPG.7461b8d46e61c7f6e4331ba8e23001ee.JPG

Now water flows in two ways...
Path A - water discharge by rain pipe to the algae mesh/panel and exit to carbon filter panel.

Path B - water flow out to 2 compartment filled with Chaeto & micro algae then to media block and exit through carbon filter.

Lighting has also been replaced by LED growing light.

    IMG_4817.JPG.88d79ab7ecc7079eeb25fcbd87006cf2.JPGIMG_4818.JPG.1c751a1fa95b5bf15554e169b96043fd.JPG

I am hoping that pod can populate here as well as aim to export nutrients and improve denitrification with media rock with slow flow rates.

Great DIY! Did u roughen up the mesh screen? it will encourage better hair algae growth as they have something to hold onto.

  13. Hi all so I finally received my tank and had it set up.  Kind of disappointed with the scape.  I had wanted more arches and less caves but had to scape with the sand inside(I don't want to talk about why the sand is inside it) so was literally scaping by feeling.  Unfortunately had already applied the bonding putty for fear of it toppling and cracking the glass so by the time the water settled the putty had set.  I don't intend to take this hunk of rock out now.  Hope the gurus can help me work with this.
Appreciate my wife and daughter who saw the positive in it.  They say they can see a dragon in the rock work and a fortune cat. LOL!
The first two pictures are from the side.  I was thinking of putting pulsing xenia on the ledge towards the back of the scape and the other side leather mushrooms.  I over compensated on the distance between the tank wall and the scape on the left hand side.

This is the front of the tank.  I am literally face palming as I take the picture.

Maybe can add a small rock on bottom left corner to touch up. To be honest, i think your scape dont look bad at all. But i also poor artistic sense maybe other senior can advise.

Dont fret too much, it will look nice when corals take over unless u going fowler. Just enjoy the hobby and happy reefing!

  14. I have used the exact same chinese chiller in the picture above and also switched to hailea 28a few months after, ran both on my old 10 gallon nano. One thing I noticed was that the chinese chiller ran for longer periods of time as it took longer to reach the temperature set. Now I've upgraded to a 40 gallon and still continued using the same hailea chiller.

TLDR; hailea is a great option if you do have plans to upgrade in near future

Hailea is also chinese brand haha, just more “atas” chinese brand. they got brand reputation to protect so products will be better built compared to ulu TB chiller.

  15. U using rowa to lower phosphate for algae issues? u need to start slow. As age old advice in reefing, u need to be patient and not shock the system. Best to use less rowa at the start and monitor. Slowly increase the dose and do regular measurements. For algae issues, do find a root cause (over feeding, too high bio load and not establish nutrient export) and implement the stable export system.

Sorry to tell u chances of comeback is near zero, i used to hope like u last time, but corals if they press self destruct button due to bad water parameters is likely gone case. Only exception i found was due coral stinging or wrong placement which is higher chance of recovery. just my opinion.

For algae, best solution i tink is manual removal with toothbrush and siphon, u need put in hard work also. over time the algae will disappear provided ur nutrient export is establish. Thats why got this term call “ugly” phase, it will pass one day.

Take it slow, hope got help u.

  16. Time for fish update

My male banggai cardinal has stop eating for few days now. Usually eats mysis alot. Hopefully is spawning as it seems holding stuff in its mouth, and i saw it behaving suspiciously with the female at the back of the tank at night a few days ago . Any seniors also see this? Can advise?? TIA

oh boy..taking fish photo takes another level of skill and i tot taking corals photo is hard...
