Agree with ervine.Even if you want a comparsion between different ways of skimming ( reverse-flow,needle wheel, etc), different makers give very different results. Ultimatey, what constitutes a good skimmer is the kind of skimate you want to achieve and is able to sustain the bioload of your tank.

Used to add trace elements but quit after reading from somewhere that water changes is a safer option to replenish those elements.

Yup water changes is the easiest and cheapest way to increase your mg level.Juz take note that certain saltmix is known to have low levels of calcium and magnesium.Gd luck.

Since you alreday going to do things before you leave, think it should be ok for juz a week.Fishes don't need to be fed daily.Twice a week should be ok.

Only detrimental effect is that oxygen levels is reduced at higher temperatures.Juz ensure the tank is well aerated.

Whats your SG level? There have been times I find that certain saltmix do not completely dissolve at higher SG even though you leave it overnite with pump.

Bro, you are taking a very big risk of inverts dying on you which in turn will crash your whole system.I never experience but have read some reefers anguish in other reef communities.If you want to try hypo-salinity I suggest you try out of the main tank.
