Poor man tank

hi,

Are there such marine tank as "poor"? I think quite tough to keep down the cost of owning a decent marine tank. I started off more than 10 years back with a school boy tank that crash Becos of anemone get suck into pump.

Last year nov, itchy hand look thro this forum and got myself a used 1 ft cube nano. Thinking to keep cost down ( home have 3 monkeys to feed). Took 1 months to set it up with IOS and a DIY algae scrubber. The constant topping up of water and the inefficient air lift skimmer frustrate me into going something bigger (man nature to seek bigger thing, ha).

The cabinet is actually a camera dry box. Surprising it is quite matching to the tank in term of size and look and the powder coating paint can tahan the salt (no sign of rust).

This decomm tank still sitting at my living room.

Will post my current 3 x 2 x 2.5ft tank after i took some photo of it.

Good night....

Hi Bro,

IMO depending on what you intend to keep, reefing need not be very costly. Softies are usually not light demanding and are more tolerant of nutrient rich environment. So if you are contented with less demanding corals, i think both the setup cost, equipment cost and running cost can be kept low .

Have a successful and enjoyable reefing journing :)

Treat others the way you wanna be treated...

thanks for the advices. but certainly every month my budget go into overrun from this hobbies. The constant checking at the buy/sell forum had tempted me into buying equipments and LS. Currently running the following equipments

3 x 2 x 2.5 with a 2 x 1.5 x 1.5 sump

1260 return and 1260 to Daelia 1/4hp chiller and Tee off to FR (Phoban)

Maxspect G2 160W

Tunez 6060, Seio & Koralia pump

BM NAC 7 skimmer

Biohome plus and Mangrove plants

Wish list - Water top up, dosing pump

Before i forget, the three monkeys refer to my kids, the big female one (over here commonly known as OC, i think a good description).

Photo of sump and display tank taken, will upload soon for bro fellow reefers to help ID some LS.

Thanks for reading and Good Night.

IMHO, your equipment is pretty decent. I definitely do not categorize it under 'poor'. A simpler setup like your earlier IOS tank may cost less up front, but has its limitation. I feel that a tank+sump setup like what you have now is more sustainable and should prove to be a better buy. All the best.

Any bro can help to ID this? Montipora? Given by a reefer as a live rock.

That should be a Heliopora Coerulea commonly known as blue ridge coral if I recall correctly.

Not technically a sps but a octocoral or soft coral and the only known one that's able to form a calcium carbonate skeleton.

Thanks for the ID, I check thro, it is indeed the blue ridge coral. It will slowly encrust the nearby live rock.
