It is absolutely necessary. Without it, your tank will crack. Make sure it is thick enough to even out the weight of your tank. For 4 ft tank, recommanded is 1-2 inch thick.

yah... styrofoam is very important as it is use to distribute the weight of your tank + water evenly.

very important. with the styrofoam, not much presuure one put onto the base glass.. Imagine having a grain of sand in between your tank and the plywood. it would put tremendous pressure on the glass and cause it to crack. Pressure = force divided by area. Such a huge force over such a small area = Great pressure. Even after you make sure that there is nothing in between, you cannot possibly get rid of minute particles invisible to the ###### eye. these particles will again exert great pressure on the base of the tank... better to use... dun risk it..

Thanks alot guys, will probably get an 1" foam to put it under my tank
