It's a empty reservoir of water under a deep sand bed. Supposedly nitrates will get attracted into this sink via some kind of gradient. Doing a search on the internet should yield more information.

The basic process is to lay pvc pipes at the bottom of the tank before adding sands. Recomended depth is about 6 to 7 inch. For more details you may check out FAMA magazine, they used to have a regular column called "Sand Mail" dedicated to plenum.

i would suggest that u use grade 10 coral chips rite at the bottom, cover it with a netting then add on grade 1-2 sand, cover with netting again and lastly grade 0 sand..try 2 inches on each layer...should do it...

The dead column of water created in the sandbed would encourage certain bacterial dat grows without oxygen and dat bacterial helps to remove nitrates....
