Sump Refugium: sand or no sand?

Want to know what is the preference. To have sand or not?

Usually if u intend to keep a refugium, refugium mud is a good option to add as it helps grow the macro algae that u add in there.

I think it really depends on your set up.

- A deep sand bed that's deep & large enough may work if you have a really large sump or a dedicated remote tank for it. For most of use here, the sump under the tank just isn't big enough to have an effective deep sand bed (for denitrification). So my personal preference is NOT to have a sand bed

- A shallow sand bed is pointless & just traps dirt
