marinehobbist
An uncle at the LFS gave me a sea urchin today. Is it reef safe or it may sting my corals? Tks for advices.
FuEl
Depends on how u view it. They don't eat corals, but they do eat coralline algae. If it's those short spine urchins you might have a problem with them as they tend to squeeze between rocks and destabilize your rockwork. For longer spine urchins like diademas etc they don't do so, but they make it very dangerous for you to stick your hand into your tank. I've had the painful experience of being attacked by one. Nothing much you can do but to rub the spines until they dissolve into your blood. Spines of urchins also irritate LPS esp when their spines poke into their flesh. SRC Member Tanzy Posted May 2, 2004 SRC Member Share Posted May 2, 2004 Short spine urchins are ok. They don't do much. Quote Warning: Heavy handed moderator in operation.
