bioballs are called nitrate factories not because they trap dirt but because they are too efficient in coverting NH3 -> NO2 -> NO3

infact bioballs are self cleaning, they are less likely to clog compared to siporax or other ceramic materials

So either you get more nitrite or nitrate.

most likely ended up as nitrate

as the 2 type of bacteria that coverts NH -> NO2 and NO2 -> NO3 needs a similar aerobic breeding environment and most likely will be neighbours

We can't the wetdry if it creates lots of nitrates because it is just doing it's job efficiently. It is our fault for overstocking or overfeeding and adding to much ammonia to the tank. Otherwise we might as well blame all open surfaces in the tank for letting denitrifying bacteria grow there

:yeah:

We can now conclude that wet drys are Not nitrate factories.

:yeah:
