SRC Member FishMad Posted December 20, 2021 SRC Member Share Posted December 20, 2021 Hi everyone I’m having some trouble with this rust like thing on my sand bed. Have tried sucking them up, and blowing them away with a turkey baster but they come back real quick. Have added Seachem sea gel to reduce phosphates and organics in the water. My LPS don’t seem to be doing well =/ Hoping it’s not Dinos but I’m not sure of how to ID them.
Reza San
Is the algae stringy? Are there visible signs of air bubbles? If yes, it might be dino. Else it might be diatom. Cyano is reddish in colour. Let us know your water parameters too. Sent from my Redmi Note 9 Pro using Tapatalk
SRC Member FishMad Posted December 20, 2021 Author SRC Member Share Posted December 20, 2021 Thanks for the reply! I do not see air bubbles. They are brownish in colour and seem to form a film over the sand bed. The LPS don’t seem happy about it Water parametersAmmonia: 0 ppm Nitrites: 1 ppm (or more than that)Nitrates: 20 ppmPhosphates: 0.01 ppmAlk: 8.5 dKHpH: 8.2Salinity: 35 pptSent from Singapore Reef Club mobile app

If you need help, pm me.

SRC Member FishMad Posted December 26, 2021 Author SRC Member Share Posted December 26, 2021 The sure way to know what you are facing is to look at the algae under the microscope. If you need help, pm me. That is very true. I was changing water yesterday day, and filtered the water with filter floss, the stuff seems to be able to go through the floss and aggregate. They are starting to look stringy and with air bubbles on them. Guessing they are Dinos now I have dosed live phytoplankton and tisbe/apocyclops pods in hopes for increasing the diversity of organisms in the water.Should I try using Vibrant / MB7, read that these two can be effective. (Trying to do it the more natural way rather than using chemicals).

SRC Member FishMad Posted December 27, 2021 Author SRC Member Share Posted December 27, 2021 Hmm that is true. I was thinking of dosing MB7 because I was initially dosing prodibio on a daily basis (freebies from another reefer when I made purchases from him), back then there were no such issues. The Dinos started once I stopped dosing Sent from Singapore Reef Club mobile app
Yztan
used to have this issue and added in a UV light. really made a huge difference to the amount of diatoms. but your tank is still relatively new and going through this phase is quite normal. increase your water flow if possible and ride it through. it should last 2-3 weeks
