What brand/type of sand to use for refugium?

Hi bro n sis,

Any advises and recommandation on what type/brand of sand to use for refugium?

what i plan now is using grade 0 sand and duno what brand to buy..

IMHO, juz use normal grade zero sand. but u will hv to wait for it to mature.

btw, how big is ur refugium? u do know that ur refugium has to be at least 60 to 70% of the surface area of ur main tank to work.

For an effective refugium the space must be at least 1/3 the size of the tank...grade 0 sand is fine but if you can use bio-sediments, miracle mud or the like would be good too.

i beg to differ. i think it shld be at least 2/3 the surface area of ur main tank and if u hv the luxury of space, go for as large as possible.

Of course the bigger the better, there are suggestions of the 1/3 rule or for some the minimum of 20% volume of the main tank size.

well, i hv used 1/3 b4 to no visible success.

Definitely the bigger the better.... i am currently using a 2 ft sized refuge for my 4 ft....works fine...previously used the 1/3 size for my 3 ft....works ok too....have a friend who has experience in such and is using refuge as the sole source of nutrient export for his sps & lps coral cultivation (w/o skimmer) sized about half the tank size.
