Hyposalinity

Recommended Posts

weileong, does all ur newly acquired fish need to go thru hyposalinity treatment. what if the fish does not show any ich after observing it for a week..i.e. brought the fish from a "trusted" lfs that guarantee no ich or fellow reefer. how safe is it to put them into the main tank.

welcome comments from all src reefers.

What I think is that it is better to err on the side of caution. Even the fishes from some of the "high end" farms carry ich parasites but not showing it.

It also depends if your main tank can take the hyposalinity treatment, if there is no corals or inverts then I guess just throw in no harm but if yours is a reef tank then wouldn't that little extra effort to quarantine the fish (at the same time apply hyposalinity treatment) be a safer bet?

I got a blue face abt 2 weeks ago and not showing ich so I'm going to throw it into my FOWLR and if ich outbreak then I'll drop the salinity there again for 8 weeks.

Did you calibrate your refractometer or double check with another one to verify that it is accurate?

In my tank the ich always disappear after 3 days.

really, bro. I got the refractormeter at iwarna there...

HOW u calibrate?

FOr me i drip tap water and tune it to 1.000. then set it up

I drip DI/RO water. I think got slight difference but should not affect the reading that much.

Just thinking what could be wrong for you.

i cannot find a reason for it too..

Tot Hypo is the best solution than copper...

The only thing i can think of is tat maybe it only kill certain stage of itch..

Or do i need to get a UV light??

No need UV.

I would still think that it is caused by too high salinity.

Or are you sure that those dots are ich in the first place?

Or should i go 1.004 with it??

confirm itch as my regal tank got those white spot ..

wonder if the fish will die as 1.004 is so low

GIve up liao!!!!!!!!!!!

I would not advise u to go below 1.008. The fish will not tahan beyond 2 weeks. I had observed my fish below 1.008, they seemed to be breathless, weaker and their colour fading. Ideally, 1.010 should remove the ich after 2-3 weeks. I guess, it could be due to the reflactometer accuracy. I use distilled water to perform the calibration under normal room temp.

Cannot lah bro, they will not survive low salinity.

The only way is to remove all fishes for hypo while you leave your main tank free from hosts (fishes) for the minimum of 6 weeks.
