Hi

I am looking to run an Iwasaki 400W and was wanting to know should I be using a Magnetic or Electronic Ballast for this globe? I read that the magnetic will give more PAR and is cheaper to purchase for this bulb, is this the case?

Hi Sabella,

PAR(photosynthetically active radiation) is a measurement of energy level of each photon depends on its wavelength given out by a light source. So the question is does magnetic ballast extent the wavelenght of the light source? If so, then the theory works.

1 thing for sure, magnetic ballast is definitely cheaper than eballast.

Sorry maybe I have not been super clear with my question.

I guess what I am asking is does the magnetic ballast drive the bulb harder, better, more PAR etc than an ellectronic Ballast would.

I know that I am able to use either magnetic or electronic with this type of SE bulb, I am just looking to use the one that drive the bulb the best.

I'm not too sure whether what is the effect of magnetic ballast or eballast on MH. But I know it's effect on T5 or any FL tube, eballast extent the lifespan of the tubes by slow/delay startup. While the cct of Magnetic ballast and eballast both have a slow startup thus I reckon it doesn't make any differents.

As for driving it harder than eballast, unless you are using a 400W ballast to drive a 250W bulb then the bulb is working OT. But this is not advisable unlike T5 which I current is using a 54W eballast to drive 39W tubes. Visible differents in the brightness on the output of the 39W tubes.

My another 6cents. Think I talk too much already. Should wait for more replies from reefers whom owns MH and runs 400W MH. Pple like AT, DA ..... the list goes on.
