Well there are many types of sumps and it all depends what you want to use it for.

Some people incorporate a refugium while some use it to hold the equipments. Its better to do more reading up on the different designs and choose one that most fits you.

Here's a good webby to check out www.melevsreef.com

For simplest, you should have at least 3 compartments in sump; skimmer, (mechanical and\or biological) filter media, and return water.

I would recommend at least 4 compartments, with the additional one as the "refugium". You can grow plant here, or treat it as temp storage for some fishs, like "resting" place, or "prison" :D

I want to set up a minimal sump set up because of vit m problem. If I want to set up a reef tank but with the equipment I have now I don't think it will be sufficient. I look at the pasar malam thread but I feel a bit lost. Can anybody tell me what equipment I need to buy it would be better if you could state the part name and how much, so roughly I will know what I'm gonna need.

my advise, if u do not have a deep enough pocket, maybe wait out and don't go into it first. wait out. you will save yourself more money in the long run and also you needn't cause any LS to suffer. this hobby will always be here for you. don't rush.
